Third Quarter Surge Leads St. John’s Past Butler, 58-47

Tartamella secures sixth 20-win season with road win over the Bulldogs
INDIANAPOLIS – St. John's Women's Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella secures his sixth 20-win season, leading the Red Storm to a victory over Butler on the road, 58-47, on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm (20-8, 10-7 BIG EAST) turned in a strong all-around performance against the Bulldogs (9-17, 8-7 BIG EAST), shooting 41.5% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc and 82.6% at the free-throw line. St. John's also controlled the boards, outrebounding Butler, 40-28.
Every player who saw the floor for the Johnnies found the scoring column, led by Sa'Mya Wyatt's 12-point effort. Janeya Grant added 10 points to reach double figures, while Daniela Abies hauled in a team-best 12 rebounds.
Defensively, St. John's held Butler without a double-digit scorer. Caroline Dotsey and McKenna Johnson paced the Bulldogs with nine points each.
After a quiet first two minutes of the opening quarter, the Johnnies surged ahead with a 4-0 run. Butler responded to knot the score at four with five minutes remaining. The intensity picked up over the final three minutes, as both sides exchanged baskets, and the Red Storm carried a narrow 15-13 edge into the second period. The first 10 minutes featured seven lead changes and three ties, with Wyatt accounting for seven of St. John's 15 points in the frame.
Butler opened the second quarter with a free throw before the Johnnies stretched their advantage to 21-14, as Brooke Moore and Wyatt capitalized at the line. The Bulldogs answered with a 4-0 spurt to trim the margin to three, 21-18. In the closing 90 seconds of the half, Abies and Butler's Gabby Wilke traded layups, sending the teams into the locker room with St. John's holding a 23-20 lead.
Coming out of halftime, Butler trimmed the deficit to one, 25-24, before the Johnnies responded with a decisive 10-0 run at the 7:26 mark. Back-to-back three-pointers from Grant highlighted the surge and pushed the lead to 35-24. Jailah Donald added a triple to make it 38-26, but the Bulldogs answered with five straight points to close the gap to 38-31 with 2:30 remaining in the quarter. Abies and Kylie Lavelle converted at the free-throw line, and Grant knocked down another jumper to give St. John's a 44-33 advantage heading into the fourth.

Butler made one last push in the closing two minutes, scoring seven unanswered to pull within 10, 55-45. However, Shaulana Wagner and Donald combined for three free throws down the stretch to seal a 58-47 victory for St. John's.
The Red Storm return home to host Georgetown for Senior Day on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Carnesecca Arena.
