Georgetown Spoils Senior Night, 62-60

QUEENS, N.Y. – A late fourth quarter scoring effort came up short as the St. John's women's basketball team fell to Georgetown, 62-60, on Wednesday night.
The Red Storm (20-9, 10-8 BIG EAST) fought until the final buzzer but suffered a tough Senior Night defeat to the Hoyas (13-13, 6-11 BIG EAST). St. John's held a 29-24 edge on the boards while both teams knocked down 23 field goals in the tightly contested matchup.
Three Johnnies scored in double figures, led by Brooke Moore with 15 points, four rebounds and four steals. Sa'Mya Wyatt added 13 points, matching her career high with four assists, while contributing four rebounds and tying her season best with two blocks and two steals. Beautiful Waheed finished with 10 points to round out the trio and Daniela Abies controlled the glass with a team-high nine rebounds. Shaulana Wagner facilitated the offense with five assists.
For the Hoyas, Brianna Scott delivered a game-high 22 points, accounting for more than a third of the Hoyas' scoring. Destiny Agubata contributed 13 points on the night.
Jailah Donald kicked off Senior Night, knocking down a jumper from the elbow just a minute into the game. Moore followed with a strong drive to the rim, giving St. John's an early 4-2 edge. Scott answered for Georgetown, sinking a pair of free throws and draining back-to-back three-pointers to swing the score to 10-4 five minutes in. The Johnnies responded with a push of their own, trimming the deficit to 12-10 at the 3:05 mark of the first quarter, highlighted by a three from Moore. Georgetown stretched its advantage back to 16-12 with 1:16 remaining, but Janeya Grant buried a timely triple to bring St. John's within one, 16-15, at the end of the opening frame.
The Hoyas began the second quarter on a 5-0 run before Grant connected on her second three of the night to make it 21-18. Georgetown extended its lead to seven, 25-18, with 5:24 left in the half. St. John's answered with a 6-0 surge to pull within one, 25-24, but the Hoyas countered with a pair of layups and exchanged late 3-pointers with Grant to take a 34-29 lead into the break.
St. John's and Georgetown traded shots through the opening four minutes of the second half, with Georgetown maintaining a 42-35 cushion. Wyatt and Moore combined for six late points in the third quarter, trimming the margin to 49-43 heading into the final period.
St. John's surged to start the fourth, using a 7-0 run sparked by Abies and Moore to seize its first lead since the 7:08 mark of the first quarter, 50-49. Wyatt and Waheed stretched the advantage to five, 57-52, with three minutes remaining. Georgetown answered with four straight points to tie the contest at 58 with 3:35 left. Moore briefly restored a two-point edge, but the Hoyas countered at the 1:21 mark to even the score at 60. Scott then converted a pair of free throws with 23 seconds on the clock to put Georgetown in front for good, and St. John's final opportunity fell short in a 62-60 setback.
The Red Storm will travel to Seton Hall for the final road game of the regular season on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
