Red Storm extends winning streak to four, improves to 7-1 on the season
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The St. John's men's tennis team edged Cleveland State, 4-3, on Friday night in a thrilling contest at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
With the victory, the Red Storm improved to 7-1 on the season, extending their winning streak to four matches.
In doubles play, the reigning BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week duo of Adam Groves and Semen Agynskyy set the tone on the No. 3 court, cruising to a 6-2 victory over Cole Chappell and Nico Jamison. Cleveland State responded with a win on the No. 1 court, but the pair of Danilo Raicevic and Radomir Tomic secured the doubles point for St. John's with a 6-3 triumph over Tristan Stine and Maxime Aremon on the No. 2 court.
The Vikings evened the match at one apiece with a win on the No. 6 court to open singles play. Taichi Wakamatsu quickly restored the Red Storm's lead with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Aremon on the No. 4 court. Agynskyy extended the advantage to 3-1, earning a hard-fought 6-2, 7-6 win against Jamison on the No. 3 court.
Tomic clinched the match for St. John's on the No. 1 court, defeating Lincoln Battle in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. Cleveland State captured the final two matches on the No. 2 and No. 5 courts to bring the final score to 4-3.
St. John's will return to action on Saturday, hosting BIG EAST foe Butler at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
