LEXINGTON, Ky. – The St. John's baseball team dropped a tight contest at No. 22 Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at Kentucky Proud Park, 3-0.
The Wildcats (8-2) capitalized on a pair of Red Storm (1-8) errors to manufacture runs, despite a strong pitching performance from Evan Chaffee. The Johnnies had runners on base in all but one inning.
Chaffee went 6.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits and striking out four. Victor Frederick came in for 1.1 innings of hitless relief.
Dylan Fitzsimmons went 3-for-4 from the dish with a trio of singles. Adam Agresti picked up a double, going 1-for-2 and was hit by a pitch. Both Shaun McMillan and Ayden Frey went 1-for-3 with a single.
After putting runners on in the first two innings, the Johnnies threatened with a two-out rally to load the bases in the top of the third but couldn't get a runner across the plate.
In the top of the fourth frame, Agresti legged out a double to left field and Sean Britt laid down a bunt to advance Agresti to third. However, the Wildcats extinguished the momentum and escaped without allowing a run.
In the bottom of the fourth, Kentucky tacked on its first run of the game with a single to make it 1-0.
The top of the seventh saw St. John's put another runner on third base but again couldn't get their man across.
A pair of errors in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Wildcats to take a 3-0 lead.
In the ninth, the Red Storm used a two-out pinch-hit double from Cristian Bernardini to try and get one across but fell short in the second game of the series, 3-0.
St. John's concludes its series with No. 22 Kentucky tomorrow. First pitch from Kentucky Proud Park is set for 1 p.m.
