The Red Storm improved to 13-0 in neutral site games behind Sarah Post’s walk-off
GREENVILLE, N.C. — The St. John's softball team (14-4, 0-0 BIG EAST) earned a walk-off 3-2 win over Campbell before falling to East Carolina, 2-1, on Saturday at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
Following the victory over Campbell, the Red Storm moved to 13-0 in neutral-site games this spring, tying No. 1/1 Tennessee for the longest active neutral-site streak in NCAA Division 1.
The Johnnies opened the day with a 3-2 victory over Campbell behind a complete-game effort from Ana Serafinko, who struck out 10 batters and held the Camels to just five hits. Offensively, Jess Bianco reached base twice, stole two bases and scoring the tying and winning runs, while Sarah Post delivered the walk-off single in the seventh.
In the afternoon matchup, Loreley Francia worked all six innings for St. John's allowing just four hits and one earned run with six strikeouts. The Red Storm out-hit ECU 6-4, but a two-run sixth inning proved to be the difference in the narrow setback.
Game 1: St. John's 3, Campbell 2
St. John's struck first in the opening inning after Bianco reached on an error, stole second and advanced on London Slade's infield single. Bianco later scored on an RBI groundout from Elanna Lysiak, granting the Johnnies a quick 1-0 advantage.
Serafinko kept Campbell quiet through four innings, striking out the side in the first and retiring nine of the first ten hitters she faced. The Camels tied the game in the fifth after a walk and an outfield misplay prolonged the inning before taking a 2-1 lead in the sixth.
The Red Storm threatened in the bottom half of the sixth when Natasha Limbani and Serafinko singled and Cassidy Stouffer walked to load the bases, but Campbell escaped.
St. John's completed the comeback in the seventh. Bianco drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Lysiak then walked and pinch-runner Madison Konopka advanced to second. Post followed by lining a single into center, scoring Bianco and Konopka to grant the Johnnies a 3-2 walk-off win.
Serafinko earned the victory with seven innings pitched, 10 strikeouts, five hits allowed and two earned runs.
Game 2: East Carolina 2, St. John's 1
The Red Storm added the first run of the afternoon after Stouffer doubled to left field before Limbani delivered an RBI single to short for an early 1-0 lead.
Francia kept ECU scoreless through the first five innings, allowing just one hit during that stretch while recording six strikeouts to keep the Johnnies ahead.
The momentum shifted in the bottom of the sixth when the Red Storm gave up two runs. After a leadoff triple, the Pirates tied the game on a sacrifice fly. A single and fielding error later in the inning brought home an unearned run, putting St. John's down 2-1.
The Johnnies continued to pressure late, including a bunt single from Bianco in the bottom of the seventh, but came up just short in the latter half of its two-game slate.
St. John's out-hit ECU, 6-4, with additional hits coming from Stouffer, Limbani, Post and Konopka.
Francia finished the complete-game effort with six strikeouts, four hits allowed and just one earned run.
Now 2-1 in Greenville, N.C., St. John's will return to action tomorrow against Rider before a rematch with ECU. The Red Storm's opening tilt with Rider is set for 9 a.m., while the second meeting with ECU is slated for 11:30 a.m.
