St. John’s Falls to No.19/RV Rutgers in Queens

The Johnnies are back in action on Saturday against Mercer
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's lacrosse fell to No. 19/RV Rutgers, 19-4, at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The Red Storm (2-5, 0-0 BIG EAST) tallied one goal in each quarter, with redshirt junior Adrian Nowak accounting for two of St. John's four goals. No. 19/RV Rutgers (6-2, 0-0 Big Ten) controlled the faceoff circle with an 18-9 advantage, while St. John's goalkeepers Matt Nelson and Danny Seaman combined for 14 saves in net.
Rutgers raced out to an early 2-0 advantage in the opening five minutes. St. John's held the Scarlet Knights scoreless for the next five minutes, but Rutgers regained momentum late in the quarter, adding four more goals in the closing minutes. With just eight seconds left in the period, Nowak dove at the edge of the crease to put the Johnnies on the board, closing the first quarter with Rutgers ahead, 6-1.
The Scarlet Knights struck first in the second quarter to extend their lead to 7-1. Nowak responded at the 8:30 mark, slipping past the defense to score his second goal of the game and cut the deficit to 7-2. Rutgers quickly regained control, however, rattling off five straight goals, sparked by Colin Kurdyla and Haydn Sommer, to carry a 12-2 lead into halftime.
After halftime, Rutgers kept the pressure on, adding four more goals in the third quarter. Midway through the period, freshman AJ Jeffares found the back of the net for his first career goal, closing the quarter with Rutgers leading 16-3.
In the final frame, the Red Storm limited the Scarlet Knights to their lowest scoring quarter of the game, allowing just three goals. St. John's freshman Jackson Harcarik recorded his first career goal in the final 35 seconds, but the Red Storm ultimately fell to Rutgers, 19-4.
Following Tuesday's matchup against the Scarlet Knights, the Johnnies will hit the road for a Saturday matinee against Mercer in Macon, Ga. Face-off from Five Star Stadium is slated for 11 a.m.
