Five Johnnies tied season-highs across Sunday’s slate
QUEENS, N.Y. — The St. John's softball team (19-8, 1-2 BIG EAST) picked up a pair of victories on Sunday at Red Storm Field, defeating Harvard, 7-4, in the morning before topping Army, 9-3, in the afternoon contest.
London Slade and Natasha Limbani each matched their season highs with two runs, while Avery Neuman tied her season high with three RBIs in the win over Army. Makenna Meadows recorded two hits and two RBIs, both matching season highs, and Madison Konopka added two hits, tying her season high.
The Red Storm offense totaled 16 runs and 17 hits across the two games, while Ana Serafinko struck out 10 batters in the circle against Harvard to help St. John's secure the sweep.
Game 1: St. John's 7, Harvard 4
St. John's jumped out to an early lead in a 7-4 victory over Harvard in Sunday morning's opener.
The Red Storm struck first in the bottom of the opening frame. Slade singled before advancing to third on a groundout by Serafinko. Sarah Post then delivered an RBI single to bring Slade home and give St. John's a 1-0 advantage.
St. John's broke the game open in the second inning with four runs. Meadows doubled to start the rally before Jess Bianco and Slade each drove in runs with RBI singles. Serafinko followed with a two-run double to extend the lead to 5-0.
Harvard cut into the deficit in the fifth inning on a two-run double to make it 5-2.
The Red Storm added insurance in the bottom of the fifth. After Elanna Lysiak reached on an error and Serafinko walked, Meadows singled to drive in two runs and extend the advantage to 7-2.
The Crimson scored once in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Serafinko finished off the victory in the circle.
Serafinko tossed a complete game, striking out 10 batters while allowing four runs on nine hits across seven innings.
Meadows paced the Red Storm offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Slade added two hits and an RBI. Serafinko also drove in two runs.
Game 2: St. John's 9, Army 3
St. John's used a four-run third inning to pull away and secure a 9-3 victory over Army in the afternoon contest.
The Red Storm opened the scoring in the second inning. Limbani singled before Cassidy Stouffer drove her in with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Neuman reached on a fielder's choice that allowed two runs to score before crossing the plate during a rundown between second and third to give St. John's a 4-0 lead.
Army answered in the third inning when Ashton White doubled to bring home a run and trim the deficit to 4-1.
St. John's responded in the bottom half of the inning with four more runs. Meadows singled home a run before Neuman delivered a three-run double to extend the lead to 8-1.
The Red Storm added another run in the fourth inning when Meadows grounded out to bring home Alyssa Platero and make it 9-1.
Army plated two runs in the fifth on a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 9-3, but the Black Knights would get no closer.
Loreley Francia earned the win after tossing a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out six.
Having completed its first homestand at Red Storm Field this season, St. John's will head to the Bronx for a midweek matchup with Fordham on March 18 at 3 p.m. The contest will be streamed live on ESPN+, with live stats available on RedStormSports.com.
