The Red Storm and Quakers meet for 6th time since 2013
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team heads to Philadelphia on Wednesday for a matchup against No. 42-ranked Penn (13-6, 0-0 Ivy League). First serve from the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Johnnies enter the week at 13-3 overall and 3-0 in BIG EAST play after splitting their two matches last week, defeating Monmouth before falling to Yale on Saturday.
Against Monmouth, St. John's was dominant from the opening point. Venedikt Tsirikidze, Adam Groves, and Semen Agynskyy each turned in strong performances, while Radomir Tomic clinched the victory with a straight-set win on the top court. Sergej Zivkovic and David Petrovic rounded out the effort as the Red Storm cruised to a 6-0 sweep.
Penn arrives Wednesday having won four of its last five matches, though it most recently dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 70-ranked Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. The Quakers opened the season at 5-1 before hitting a more inconsistent stretch in the win column.
In doubles, Penn boasts one of the nation's premier pairs, the No. 7-ranked tandem of Manfredi Graziani and Aaron Sandler, who carry a perfect 14-0 record, all earned on the No. 1 court. Graziani leads the way in singles as well, ranked No. 60 nationally with a 9-4 mark this spring.
Wednesday's contest marks the sixth meeting between the two programs dating back to 2013, with St. John's holding a 3-2 edge in the series. In their most recent clash in February 2024, Dillon Pottish's squad edged Penn 4-3 in Philadelphia.
Following Wednesday's match, the Red Storm return to action Sunday, traveling to Fort Worth to take on No. 2-ranked TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
