Will Cowan matches career-highs in hits and RBIs
The Red Storm (10-14) jumped out to an early lead, using five-run and four-run innings to create separation from the Red Foxes (7-16, 7-2 MAAC). Marist, however, wouldn't go quietly, trimming the deficit to one run in the late innings before the Johnnies pulled away for good.
Offensively, Will Cowan led the charge with a perfect 3-for-3 day. The sophomore recorded three singles and knocked in three runs, tying a career high in both categories. Dylan Fitzsimmons set a season high with three RBIs on his first collegiate triple. Jon LeGrande, Jayder Raifstanger and Rob Mansour each added a hit, as eight Johnnies scored at least one run.
Tommy Conley picked up his first win of the season, going 2.2 innings on three runs and two strike outs. The bullpen arms of Dylan Johnson and Tyler Longoria provided a combined 3.1 innings of scoreless ball. Longoria earned his first save of the season.
St. John's struck first just two batters into the game. After a LeGrande single and stolen base, Raifstanger drove him in with an RBI ground-rule double to make it 1-0.
In the top of the third, the Red Storm broke the game open with a five-run inning. After loading the bases with no outs, Jack Tatebrought home Raifstanger on a fielder's choice. Fitzsimmons was then hit by a pitch to reload the bases before Cowan knocked in a run when the right fielder lost the ball in the sun. With two outs, Mansour was also plunked to load the bases again. Tate scored on a wild pitch, and Lewis Rodriguez followed with a ball that resulted in a fielding error, allowing two runs to score and extending the lead to 6-0.
Marist answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 6-3.
The Johnnies responded with another offensive surge in the fourth, plating four runs. After a series of walks loaded the bases with one out, Fitzsimmons ripped a triple down the right-field line to make it 9-3. Cowan followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Fitzsimmons and extend the lead to 10-3.
The Red Foxes countered with a five-run inning of their own, trimming the deficit to 10-8.
St. John's added an insurance run in the sixth, as Cowan drove in Fitzsimmons for his third RBI of the day to make it 11-8.
Marist threatened again in the eighth, scoring two runs to pull within one, but Longoria entered and worked the Red Storm out of the inning to preserve the lead at 11-10.
The Johnnies sealed the victory with a four-run ninth inning. With runners on first and second, Rodriguez laid down a bunt and reached on an error, allowing both runners to score. With the bases loaded, back-to-back walks forced in the final two runs to secure the 15-10 win.
St. John's turns its attention to a weekend series against California Baptist starting on Friday. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is set for 3 p.m., as the team will host its "2 for $4 Hot Dog" promotion.
