QUEENS, N.Y. — The St. John's softball team fell in the series finale to Butler in a heartbreaker, 9-8, on Friday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
The Red Storm (23-12, 4-5 BIG EAST) battled back from an early deficit, scoring five runs over the final three innings, but ultimately left the bases loaded in the seventh, narrowly falling to the conference-leading Bulldogs (16-10, 8-1 BIG EAST).
St. John's totaled eight runs on a season-high 18 hits in the contest. London Slade led the way with four hits, matching her season high and marking her third four-hit game of the season. Jess Bianco added three hits, while Sarah Post drove in three runs on three hits, matching her season high in RBIs and tying her career high in hits. Natasha Limbani and Makenna Meadows each recorded two hits, with Meadows tying her career highs with two hits and two RBIs.
Butler struck first in the opening inning on an RBI double before the Red Storm answered immediately in the bottom half. Elanna Lysiak tied the game with an RBI single before Post delivered a two-run single to give St. John's a 3-1 lead.
The Bulldogs responded with a six-run second inning, capitalizing on a St. John's error before plating five unearned runs to take a 7-3 advantage.
Butler added two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run home run to extend the lead to 9-3.
St. John's began its comeback in the fifth inning when Ana Serafinko launched a solo home run as part of a two-hit performance. Meadows followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 9-5.
The Red Storm continued to rally in the sixth inning. Post and Limbani each delivered RBI singles before Meadows drove in a third run to bring St. John's within one, 9-8.
