Covaliu Defends Men’s Saber Title at NCAA Regional

The Red Storm produced top-10 finishes in four weapons, highlighted by Vlad Covaliu’s second straight men’s saber regional title
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams had 20 fencers compete for spots at the NCAA Championships on Sunday at the NCAA Northeast Regional hosted by Vassar.
The Red Storm was highlighted by a dominant showing in the men's saber, where Vlad Covaliu captured the individual title for the second consecutive season. Fellow Johnnie Adham Moataz improved on his third-place finish from a season ago to claim the runner-up spot while Darii Lukashenko added a ninth-place result, giving St. John's three fencers inside the top 10 in the weapon.
In men's epee, Samuel Imrek paced the squad with a fifth-place finish, marking another strong regional showing after finishing third in the weapon last season. Daniil Mazur placed 15th while Adam Horvath and Lars Ponikvar finished 28th and 29th, respectively.
The men's foil group saw Jan Nowak repeat his seventh-place finish from last year's regional while Sebastian Garcia joined him in the top 10 with a ninth-place result. Igor Wozniak and Bronislav Petrov finished 24th and 26th, respectively.
On the women's side, Catinca Dumitru led the Red Storm with a sixth-place finish in women's saber, matching her placement from last year's regional. Salome Berger and Chloe Butman finished 25th and 47th in the weapon.
In women's foil, Antonina Lachman finished 15th while Malwina Kolodziejczyk tied for 20th.
The women's epee squad was paced by Nicole Feygin, who placed 13th after finishing 25th in the event at last year's regional. Elisa Treglia and Anastasiia Kudierova finished 22nd and 45th, respectively.
St. John's will now await the NCAA Championships selections. The national meet is scheduled to take place from March 19-22 at Notre Dame.
