Red Storm use a six-run fifth inning to surge past the Pride
The Red Storm (18-18, 5-1 BIG EAST) engineered a six-run fifth inning to overcome a five-run Pride (11-19, 6-9 CAA) lead, powered by a Shaun McMillan two-run blast.
All St. John's batters reached base safely in the contest, as the offense was led by Jon LeGrande, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a single, a double, two walks and an RBI. Both McMillan and Adam Agresti each hit home runs and four other Johnnies notched a hit. Rob Mansour and Lewis Rodriguez each had two-RBI singles.
Nick Gilpin made his first career start, going 4.0 innings and allowed just two runs while striking out two. A number of relievers contributed, as Nick Romer earned his first career save in 1.2 innings of scoreless ball.
St. John's got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. LeGrande doubled to left field and came around to score on Jayder Raifstanger's RBI single. Following a pair of walks from McMillan and Agresti, Dylan Fitzsimmons sent a sacrifice fly to right field to score Raifstanger to make it 2-0.
Hofstra quickly answered in the top of the second to knot the game at 2-2.
The Red Storm responded in the bottom of the second frame. Following a Sean Britt walk and a Rodriguez sac bunt, LeGrande laced a single to left to bring Britt around to score and reclaim the lead, 3-2.
The Pride rallied for five runs to push the game to 7-3 in the fifth, but St. John's answered with a six-run inning in the bottom half. After LeGrande worked a walk and stole second, McMillan launched a 407-foot two-run homer to left-center to chip away at the deficit. With the bases loaded, Mansour knocked in a pair with a single to level to contest at 7-7. Following a Britt walk to juice the bases once more, Rodriguez put a ball through the left side to bring home two runs and put the Johnnies ahead, 9-7.
Agresti added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with his 14th dinger of the season, sending it 415 feet to make it 10-7.
Brady Clark and Romer sealed the deal for the Red Storm across the final 3.2 innings, not allowing a run.
St. John's begins an eight-game road swing this weekend, starting with a conference clash at UConn. First pitch in Storrs, Conn., is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.
