St. John’s Heads to UConn for BIG EAST Clash

Red Storm and the Huskies to battle for the first time this season
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's begins an eight-game road swing this weekend, starting with a conference clash at UConn from Elliott Ballpark.
Game one on Friday is set for 6 p.m. Saturday's contest will begin at 2 p.m. and the series finale will start at 1 p.m. in Storrs, Conn. All three games will be available to watch on ESPN+.
St. John's (18-18, 5-1 BIG EAST) used a complete team effort to rally past Hofstra, 10-7, on Tuesday, using a six-run fifth inning to overcome a five-run deficit. Shaun McMillan sparked the rally with a two-run home run, while Rob Mansour and Lewis Rodriguez each delivered two-run RBI singles to give St. John's the lead. Jon LeGrande paced the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and an RBI, as all St. John's batters reached base safely. Adam Agresti added insurance with a solo home run, his 14th of the season.
On the mound, Nick Gilpinallowed two runs over 4.0 innings in his first career start, and Nick Romer earned his first save with 1.2 scoreless innings to close out the win.
For the second straight week, St. John's had two players named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as Evan Chaffee and Agresti were recognized following a series win over Georgetown. Chaffee tossed six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts in a 9-0 win, while Agresti hit .500 with four doubles, a home run and five RBIs to lead the offense.
Following its series win over Georgetown, St. John's moved into first place in the BIG EAST standings, backed by strong pitching and defense. The Red Storm leads the conference by allowing just 8.92 hits per nine innings and ranks second with a .975 fielding percentage.
Offensively, the Johnnies rank second in the conference with 62 stolen bases and third with 166 walks. The squad also ranks in the top half of the league in RBIs with 192.
Individually, Liam O'Leary owns a 2.97 ERA to rank fifth in the BIG EAST and owns one of the five complete games in the conference this season. Chaffee sits seventh in strike outs with 46 to lead the team. Dylan Johnson, Victor Frederick and Evan Hoeckele are tied for seventh in saves, each notching a pair.
Agresti leads the conference with 38 RBIs and ranks second in the conference and 18th in Division I with 14 home runs. Dylan Fitzsimmons and Will Cowan are tied for fourth in the league with two triples each.
St. John's and UConn (20-17, 6-3 BIG EAST) will face in a critical BIG EAST series this weekend. The pair sit within the top three of the conference standing. The Huskies hold a 71-62 edge in the all-time series and a 39-23 advantage in Storrs. The Johnnies faced UConn four times last season, falling short in each contest, including the BIG EAST Tournament.
UConn most recently fell to No. 24 Boston College, 8-5, in Chestnut Hill, Mass. After dropping game one to Xavier, the Huskies righted the ship for the 2-1 series victory over the weekend.
As a team, UConn ranks among the nation's leaders in doubles, ranking 17th with 82 two-baggers. Individually, Jackson Marshall leads the league with 13 doubles and second with 53 hits. Camden Righi has been a key bat for the Huskies, sitting second in the conference with three triples and ranks fourth in the BIG EAST with a .359 batting average.
On the mound, Cayden Suchy has emerged as one of the BIG EAST's top arms, leading the conference with a 0.92 WHIP to rank 18thnationally.
