Mickey Blum
- Title:
- Volunteer Assistant Coach
Head Coach Jason Miller announced the addition of Notre Dame lacrosse alumnus Mickey Blum to his staff as a volunteer assistant coach. Blum will join Assistant Coach Terry Mangan in guiding the Red Storm’s defensive unit for the 2017 campaign.
“I’m really excited to add Mickey to our staff,” said Miller. “He earned a New York State Championship at Garden City playing under the legendary “Doc” Dougherty, and had a great college career at Notre Dame under Kevin Corrigan and Kevin Anderson. His high school coaching experience back at Garden City under Steve Fennell, and down in Maryland at Severna Park High School will enable him to connect to our players right away. We are excited about the impact he will make on our program.”
Coach Blum brings more than 10 years of coaching experience at the high school ranks as well as a bevy of playing experience, having won a state championship at Garden City High School and playing for a Notre Dame squad that reached the 2001 NCAA Championship semifinals.
A Rockaway Beach, N.Y., native, Blum was the only captain on his high school squad that won the New York State Championship his senior year in 2000. Following a successful high school career, Blum went on to Notre Dame where he was a four year starter at close defense on teams that finished in the top-10 in NCAA Division I lacrosse in scoring defense. His 2001 Notre Dame squad reached the NCAA Championship semifinals.
Following his player career, Coach Blum spent eight years as a defensive coordinator for his alma mater Garden City. He focused and managed the defense, the man down unit as well as rides and clears. During his time, Garden City reached the state championship game four different times including back-to-back state championship victories as well at the No. 1 nationally ranked team in 2012.
After a quick stint at Xavier High School in New York City, Blum spent last year as the defensive coordinator of Severna Park High School in Maryland. His defense helped guide Severna Park to a state championship while averaging less than five goals against per game.
