Women's Tennis Falls 6-1 to Seton Hall

Jamaica, N.Y. - The St. John's University women's tennis team fell 6-1 to BIG EAST rival Seton Hall this afternoon at the Courts at St. John's. On hand to watch today's match was former New York City Mayor, and avid tennis supporter, David Dinkins. With the loss the Red Storm fall to 10-4 on the season and 4-3 in the conference. Seton Hall improves to 8-10 and 4-3.
St. John's took an early 1-0 lead, as two of the three doubles pairs picked up wins. Hande Gorur (Istanbul, Turkey) and Lauren Leo (Staten Island, N.Y.) started things off with an 8-6 win over Kimberly Barfuss and Viviana Figueroa in the No. 1 spot and Jennifer Liantonio (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and Kristina Bothova (Bratislava, Slovakia) closed out the point with an 8-6 win over Veronika Gerka and Mai-Liis Jogi in the third doubles match. Seton Hall's Catalina Isaza and Lorell Zamot won the No. 2 match, 8-5.
The Pirates bounced back and swept the singles action, to take the match 6-1. Barfuss and Gorur battled to three sets in the No. 1 spot, before Barfuss took the 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 decision. Figueroa and Zamot won their matches over Bothova and Davidson, respectfully, in the no. 2 and no. 3 spots. After dropping the first set 6-2, Bothova bounced back to take the second set, but fell 6-3 in the third. Davidson also battled in three sets, winning the first 6-2, before falling in the final two. Isaza beat Leo 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot to give the Pirates the win.
The Red Storm are back in action tomorrow at Army. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
