QUEENS, N.Y. - Kia Wright scored 20 points and Angela Clark had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead the St. John's women's basketball team to its fourth-straight victory Sunday afternoon in Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm topped Niagara, 67-43, to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Wright's 20 points were a game-high, as the junior guard shot 5-for-11 from the field, including a game-high four 3-pointers. She was also a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line and tallied four steals and four assists.
Clark, meanwhile, has now had a double-double in three of the Red Storm's four games.
The Red Storm's defensive effort was strong, as the Purple Eagles (1-3) did not have a player reach double figures in scoring. They were led by Jessi Tomasin, who hit three shots from behind the 3-point line for nine points.
St. John's got off to a quick start, as Danielle Chambers scored the first six points of the game and the Red Storm built a 9-0 early lead. Chambers and Wright led the way with eight first-half points each and St. John's had a commanding 30-19 lead at halftime.
St. John's never trailed the entire game, as a balanced effort paid off and the Red Storm won by a final score of 67-43.
Chambers finished with 12 rebounds and eight points and also had two steals. Greeba Barlow and Tiina Sten came off the bench to score five points apiece, while Mercedes Dukes and Lisa Claxton had four each.
St. John's continues its two-game homestand when it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
NOTEWORTHY: St. John's opens the season with an undefeated 4-0 record for the second year in a row ... the Red Storm and Purple Eagles had not met since the 1995 season and St. John's improved its record in the all-time series to 2-1 ... Kia Wright has scored in double figures in each of the Red Storm's wins this season ... she is the first St. John's player to have a 20-point game this year ... after going 6-for-6 from the free throw line today, Wright remains the only St. John's player who is still perfect from the charity stripe (9-for-9) this season ... over the last four games, Danielle Chambers is averaging 12.0 rebounds per game.
