Georgetown Tops St. John's, 16-6

Saturday, March 5, 2005, Queens, NY - The St. John's University men's lacrosse team fell to ECAC foe Georgetown 16-6 this afternoon in front of more than 600 fans at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, NY. Georgetown improves to 1-1 (1-0 ECAC), while St. John's falls to 1-2 (0-1 ECAC).
Freshman Justin O'Donnell led the Red Storm with three goals and one assists while captain Mike McGuire added one goal, one assist. Goalie Matthew Duca recorded 11 saves for St. John's.
Georgetown led early in the game, firing off four straight goals before former Hoya McGuire answered above the crease with 33 seconds left in the first quarter. O'Donnell started the scoring in the second at 13:15 from 10 yards out to make the game 4-2. Georgetown's Brodie Merrill answered back eight seconds later, increasing the lead to three.
Up 8-3 at halftime and after a scoreless seven minutes into the third quarter, Georgetown tallied four straight goals, before O'Donnell answered back unassisted from outside the crease to cut the lead to nine. The Hoyas responded with another 4-0 run, until Randy Mills (5:24) and O'Donnell from Patrick Zeis scored two more goals for the Red Storm to end the game 16-6.
Georgetown outshot St. John's, 47-25, and held the edge in groundballs, 35-27.
The Red Storm returns to action next Saturday, March 12, when they will travel to Philadelphia, PA to face Drexel University in a non-conference match-up. Face off is set for noon at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
