Women's Tennis Defeats Southern Mississippi In Final Home Match

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team edged Southern Mississippi, 4-3, Monday afternoon on the Courts at St. John's. With the victory, the Red Storm closed out its home season undefeated for the first time since the 1998-99 season and improved to a 10-6 overall. Southern Mississippi fell to 7-12 on the season. Freshman Gabija Gasiunaite (Kaunas, Lithuania) clinched the come-from-behind win for the Red Storm at the sixth flight.
Despite dropping the doubles point in the beginning of the match, St. John's bounced back taking wins at the No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots. Mariana Chachua (Tbilisi, Georgia) topped Grace Kammerer (6-3, 6-1) at the second flight, while Barbora Blahutiakova (Bratislava, Slovakia) defeated Nikhila Narra (6-1, 6-3) at the third flight.
At the No. 5 spot, junior captain Alison Adamski (Jamaica Estates, N.Y.) stormed past Natalia Parrado (6-0, 6-0) on her way to recording her 12th singles win of the season. Gasiunaite secured the win for the Red Storm over Courtney Ulrich (6-1, 7-6) at the No. 6 spot.
In doubles action, the Red Storm earned an 8-4 win from Nataly Tumsevica (Riga, Latvia) and Adamski defeated Sherry Price and Ulrich at the No. 1 position. Chachua and Blahutiakova fell to Ali Blackett and Narra, 9-7, while Lauren Lorenzetti (Northfield, N.J.) and Gasiunaite lost their first doubles match of the season to Grace Kammerer and Chelsea Bond, 9-7, at the No. 3 spot.
The Red Storm returns to action for its final contest of the regular season against the Orange of Syracuse on Friday, April 14. First serve is scheduled for noon at the Drumlins/Skytop Tennis Complex.
