St. John's Leads Metropolitan Championships With Four Events Remaining

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's track and field team hosted the Metropolitan Championships on a rainy Saturday at DaSilva Memorial Field. The team leads the event by a 153-119 margin over Rutgers with 17 of the 21 events completed. The four jump events were postponed due to the inclement weather and will be completed on Monday, April 24.
St. John's took first, second, and third in the 400 meter dash, led by Kaydian Reid (Windsor, Conn.), who won with a time of 53.60 seconds. The mark was a personal best for Reid and it qualified her for the NCAA Championships.
At the throwing events were held on Friday at the Rutgers University Track. Blessing Egwu (Queens, N.Y.) and Grace Zollman (Joseph, Ore.) registered NCAA qualifying performances. Egwu won the hammer throw with a throw of 55.78 meters and Zollman won the javelin throw with a throw of 43.55 meters.
Also winning their respective events, Phobay Kutu-Akoi (Silver Spring, Md.) won the 100 meter dash at 12.33, Thalene King (Manchester, Jamaica) finished first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.22, and Jasmine Baretto (Staten Island, N.Y.) ran a 2:14.15 to win the 800 meter run.
Both the 4 x 100 meter and 4 x 800 meter relay squads finished first as well. In other throwing events, Kesheila Reid (St. Ann, Jamaica) won the women's discus with a 46.32 meter mark that qualifies her for the ECAC Championships.
The St. John's Track and Field team will close out the Metropolitan Championships on Monday at DaSilva Memorial Field.
