QUEENS, N.Y. - Head men's lacrosse coach Jason Miller announced seniors Mike Luyster and Tom Michaelsen and junior Matt Viscusi as the 2008 team captains on Wednesday.
"I'm really pleased with the selection of these three guys as captains," said Miller. "From the day I got here, I have felt that Viscusi is the kind of athlete you want to build your program around. Luyster and Tommy Michaelsen have been the guys we have counted on at each end of the field for their entire careers here. I'm pleased that the team recognizes the same leadership qualities in their teammates that we recognize as coaches."
Viscusi, a midfielder from Floral Park, N.Y., started seven games in 2007. He scored two goals on two shots for a 1.000 shot percentage. Both goals were scored at opportune times as Viscusi's goal tied the game at 1-1 in the Red Storm's first-ever ECAC win over Rutgers (6-4) in the waning minutes of the first half. Viscusi also scored at Penn State, bringing the Red Storm within one again at the end of the first half.
Luyster, a senior from Hicksville, N.Y., also served as captain of the 2007 squad. A three-year starter, he led the defense with 41 ground balls in 2007, was tied for second in groundballs in 2006 with 33, and 37 in 2005, third on the team. The defenseman was named the 2006 team Most Valuable Player as a sophomore.
A senior attackman, Michaelsen led the 2007 Red Storm offense in all three offensive categories with 22 goals, 15 assists and 37 points, his second straight season as the leading point scorer. The Bethpage, N.Y., native is ranked ninth on St. John's all-time leading scorer's list with 93 career points and has 10 career hat tricks. As a junior in 2007, Michaelsen was the first St. John's player to grace the All-League list since joining the ECAC in 2005 with his All-ECAC second team honor.
Both Luyster and Michaelsen are part of the elite group of four-year seniors who have been part of the evolution of the St. John's men's lacrosse program. For these seniors, 2008 will be a very special season as they have been an integral part of this rising program's reinstatement into becoming a national contender.
The Red Storm will begin its 2008 season with a Groundhog's Day double-header in Brookville, N.Y. as the team will face off against C.W. Post and NYIT in early February exhibition play. The first game is scheduled for Noon on Saturday, Feb. 2 against the C.W. Post Pioneers.
