- St. John's Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico
Opening Statement:
"That was nice especially after the Vermont game. I think we are the type of team, especially when we are playing without Kia [Wright], who is inexperienced and still so young. I think after coming off the win at N.C. State they thought `we're pretty good' and thought we could just show up and Vermont would just lie down and die. But Vermont is not that type of team. We didn't play hard, we didn't play intense. That was our goal today. Our goal today, especially in the last 10-15 minutes, when we were up so much, was how many points can we hold them to, and how few turnovers can we have. Those were two things we needed to work on. I thought we did a pretty decent job."
On Recee Mitchell's improvement from last season:
"Recee's lost 35 pounds since last season. We always knew as a staff that Recee could play, but she had a bunch of injuries and she gained a significant amount of weight and that hurt the type of player she is because she can really get out on transition and as you saw tonight she has tremendous hands. She has really made a commitment to losing that weight and doing the right thing and I think you saw some of those results today."
On the balance within the team:
"Tiina Sten really hasn't had production all year. She's been in a bit of a slump that she needs to get out of. Sky Lindsay and Monique McLean didn't give us much in the first half and we were still up 20 points. I think it says great things about the balance of our team and I feel like when we sub Recee and Coco into the game for Joy McCorvey and Tiina we don't lose anything. We sub Kristin Moore in there and we get a spark, we sub Kia in the game and it raises it to a whole other level. I think it is something we didn't have at all last year and it makes my life a lot easier."
Junior Guard Kelly McManmon
On scoring 16 points in the first half:
"It just comes down to focusing and knowing I have to knock them down and be ready to shoot. We're constantly running plays, looking for whatever is open and trying to get the best option. We have great post players that open it up for me, and when I can get a shot on the outside, I try to open it up for them. "
On keeping the intensity up after having such a big lead:
""We tried to play hard on every possession. Everybody got a chance to get in and try to run different things. We really just tried to play hard no matter what and finish the game up."
On the balance within the team:
"It feels good. Everyday someone can come out when someone is not hitting; someone else can. It is a lot of confidence for all of us."
Sophomore Center Recee Mitchell
On playing with an increased confidence level:
"I definitely play with more confidence now because I'm smaller and I can run the floor faster and last longer than what I could last year. I can feel myself getting a little stronger and I can feel the difference this year."
On bouncing back from the loss at Vermont:
"Confidence comes from within, and we have to take it one game at a time. That game was in the past and this was a new game, so we came out with confidence for this game and we won."
