Red Storm Keeps Win Streak Alive

QUEENS, N.Y. - Monique McLean scored 18 first-half points and Sky Lindsay added 14 in the opening stanza to help the St. John's women's basketball team battle back from an early 10-point deficit and defeat UMass, 84-68, on Tuesday night at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm now improves to 6-1 on the season, tying the fourth-best start in the history of the program. The 84 points scored is the highest total of the season for the Red Storm, and is the first 80-point scoring effort for the team in 2007-08.
McLean finished the contest with 22 points, which marks her third 20-point scoring contest of the season for the junior. Lindsay tallied her third-consecutive double-figure scoring game of the season with 16 points, setting a new career high. Senior Tiina Sten rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Red Storm, adding 11. The Turku, Finland, native also grabbed six boards, tying freshman Coco Hart for the team lead.
St. John's couldn't get into a scoring rhythm early in the opening half and quickly saw UMass take advantage of the situation. At the 10:50 mark, Stefanie Gerardot hit a 3-pointer to put Minutewomen ahead 27-17.
The Red Storm slowly chipped into the UMass lead and went on an 11-2 run to pull within one point, 29-28. After both teams traded baskets, Kia Wright (5 points) hit a jumper to knot the score and Kelly McManmon (7 points) gave St. John's the lead on a layup, 34-32.
After UMass tied the Red Storm with a Pam Rosanio basket, McManmon hit a 3-pointer to give St. John's the lead, 37-34. The Red Storm, who shot 62.9 percent form the field in the first half, stayed in front the rest of the game, eventually jumping out to a 24-point advantage, 69-45, at the 11:35 mark in the second half.
St. John's will hit look to continue its win streak when it travels to play Hartford on Friday at 7 p.m. The contest will be televised on SportsNet New York (SNY).
