NEW YORK - The St. John's women's soccer team remained unbeaten and tied Columbia, 1-1, Sunday night at the Columbia Soccer Complex. Sophomore forward Kelly McConnell finished classmate Courtney Lane's corner kick to give the Red Storm its goal of the night, but Columbia rallied to tie the game with a goal by Allison Leonard with less than two minutes left in regulation.
At 6-0-2, St. John's is off to the best start through eight games in program history.
McConnell, who made the move from the midfield onto the front line this season, notched her third goal of the season when she headed Lane's corner kick home. For Lane, it was her first assist of the year and the fourth of her career.
Rebecca Capinera started in goal for St. John's and posted a save, while Jaime Beran played the second half and both overtime periods. On the year, the goalkeepers have allowed just four goals (two apiece) in eight games.
In the overtime periods, each team had two shots, but none were on goal. For Columbia, Allison Vespa finished with five saves in goal.
St. John's held a slight advantage for shots, 17-13, while Columbia had the edge in corner kicks, 13-8. Raelynne Lee and McConnell led the squad with two shots each.
It was St. John's third overtime game of the season, as it now holds a 1-0-2 record in extra-period matches. The Red Storm finished non-conference play with a 5-0-2 record and now has BIG EAST opponents only ahead of it.
West Virginia is up first for St. John's, when the Red Storm travels to Morgantown for a 5 p.m. Friday night match. The squad then returns home Sunday to face Pittsburgh at 1 p.m.
