QUEENS, N.Y. - After coming up with a big 2-1 victory over Providence on Friday and with a little help from Pittsburgh, the St. John's women's soccer team clinched a spot in the 2008 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship.
The Red Storm took care of its part on Friday with the win over the Friars and then had to wait for the result from the Pittsburgh-USF contest to find out if it was advancing to the tournament. The Panthers came away with the 1-0 win over the Bulls in Tampa, Fla., which eliminated USF from earning a berth to the tournament and clinched a spot for St. John's.
The final three seedings of the American Division will be determined after Sunday's games. St. John's (8-5-4, 4-4-2 BIG EAST) currently sits in fourth place in the American Division with 14 points. Pittsburgh (7-10-1, 4-5-1 BIG EAST) is just one point behind STJ in fifth place, while UConn (6-8-4, 4-3-3 BIG EAST) is in third place with 15 points. On Sunday, St. John's will take on the Huskies in Storrs, Conn. at 1 p.m., while Pittsburgh travels to face Marquette at 1 p.m.
The top two seedings in the American division have already been determined, with West Virginia winning the regular season title for first place with 21 points, and Marquette is second with 17 points. Five teams from each division make the tournament, and Notre Dame, Georgetown, Rutgers, Cincinnati and Louisville clinched a spot in the National Division.
The berth to the BIG EAST Tournament is the third-straight for the Red Storm and the seventh all-time.
