QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's soccer team traveled to face Villanova on Friday afternoon and lost, 3-0, at Villanova Soccer Field. The Red Storm's record now stands at 4-3-4, 0-2-2 BIG EAST, while the Wildcats improve to 9-3-0, 2-2-0 BIG EAST.
"The lesson that we learned today is that we need to work hard all the time if we are going to be successful this season," head coach Ian Stone said. "There were some good individual performances, but we need to work harder as a team to get our offense going. We need to practice well this week to get back on track next weekend."
C.J. Ludemann and Jen Leaverton led the way for the St. John's offense, recording two shots apiece, while five other players each recorded one.
The Red Storm struggled answering the offensive efforts of the Wildcats, who took the early lead, 2-0, in the opening 20 minutes. St. John's tried to counter and had some opportunities in the opening frame. In the 31st minute, Ludemann fired a shot, but the defense blocked the attempt. A few minutes later, Brittany Cavarra had a good look and missed with a shot that hit the post. On the rebound, Kaitlin Haas fired a shot, but goalie Molly Williams came up with the save.
In the second half, St. John's had three chances to get on the board, but could not convert. Leaverton came out of the break and got off a quick shot, but Williams came up with the stop. In the 64th minute, Ludemann had her second chance of the day, but fired the ball wide right. The last opportunity came in the 76th minute when Courtney Curby kicked the ball towards the goal, but the defense came up with another blocked shot. Villanova found the back of the net for the third time in the contest when Kaitlin Ryan converted in the 88th minute.
Kristin Russell and Rebecca Capinera split time in net for St. John's, each playing a half and combining for nine saves. VU's Williams made two saves on nine shots faced.
The Red Storm will return to Belson Stadium for a four-game homestand and look to get back on the winning track when it hosts Marquette on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
