QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team earned its biggest victory of the year thus far, upsetting No. 55 Radford, 4-3, Saturday at the ODU Tennis Complex in Norfolk, Va. The win evened the Red Storm's record at 8-8 overall, while the Highlanders dropped their first match of the season, falling to 8-1.
The teams played the singles competition first and after losing at the top three spots, the Red Storm battled back to tie the match at 3-3 with wins at Nos. 4, 5, and 6. At No. 4, sophomore Martin Kosut outlasted his opponent, Mehdi Benhammou, who retired in the second set trailing 6-4, 3-0. Freshman Pavel Cerny won his matchup with RU's Paul Boslet, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot, while fellow classmate Asaf Honig rounded out the scoring for St. John's in singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 position.
The match would come down to the doubles point. The Red Storm pair of sophomore Derek Wallensteen/Cerny took its match at No. 3 with an 8-2 victory over Boslet/Tyler Early. With St. John's needing just one more win to clinch the doubles point, the duo of junior Alex Svetlakov/Kosut defeated Benhammou/Ivan Salec, 9-8 (7-5 in the tiebreaker) at the No. 2 spot, giving the Red Storm the point and match win. The pair of juniors Artem Vlasenko/Gustavo Loza also won its No. 1 doubles match by the same 9-8 (7-5) score.
Up next, the St. John's men's tennis team will take on the Monarchs of Old Dominion University right back at the ODU Tennis Complex in Norfolk, Va. Sunday at noon.
