CLEARWATER, Fla. - Top seeded St. John's was eliminated from the BIG EAST Tournament after Seton Hall plated nine runs in the seventh inning and went on to win 12-6. Carlos Del Rosario was 2-for-5 with a two run home run and Chris Anninos added two RBI, while Scott Barnes earned a no-decision after allowing three runs and striking out six in 6.1 innings for St. John's (41-14). Greg Miller was 4-for-5 with three RBI to lead Seton Hall (31-24)
After allowing a lead off single in the first, Barnes set down the next three in order including two strikeouts. In the bottom of the second, however, Mark Pappas put Seton Hall on top 1-0 with a solo home run to lead of the inning.
St. John's got to work in the third and plated two runs. With one out, Gino Matias and Brian Kemp were both plunked to give the Red Storm runners on first and second. Jeff Grantham then lined an RBI single into left field to plate Matias and tie the game. After Paul Karmas singled to load the bases, Anninos was plunked to force in Kemp as the Red Storm took a 2-1 lead. Sean Black, though, would retire the next two batters to end the inning.
In the bottom of the frame, Barnes retired the first batter before allowing the next three to reach via an error, a walk and a single. The lefty, however, would induce an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to keep Seton Hall off the board.
Barnes would work around a pair of singles in the fifth as the southpaw picked up two more strikeouts.
A lead off double by Anninos in the sixth sent Seton Hall to the bullpen as the Pirates brought in Luis Fernandez. Del Rosario greeted Fernandez by launching a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right center for a two run home run. After a single by Greg Hopkins, St. John's sent up pinch hitter Gil Zayas and Seton Hall went to the bullpen again and brought in Jesse Gwaltney. Zayas walked and Daniel Benedetti laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, but Gwaltney would retire the next two batters.
After a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh, Barnes allowed a bloop single into right field and a throwing error gave Seton Hall runners on first and third. St. John's went to the bullpen and brought in Miguel Valcarcel. Chris Affinito then singled into center to plate a run and Miller sent an RBI double into center field. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Colin Lynch entered for St. John's and walked in a run to tie the game at 4-4. An RBI groundout put Seton Hall up 5-4 before an infield single resulted in a throwing error and two runs. Dan Lopez then brought home two runs with a triple and scored on an error as Seton Hall went up 10-4.
Miller added a two run home run off of reliever Justin Gutsie in the eighth.
With one out in the ninth, Kemp and Grantham each singled for St. John's. Karmas followed with an RBI double off the wall in right center field before Anninos sent a sacrifice fly into right field to make it a 12-6 game.
