Frederick In Lead Group After NCAA Championships Preliminary Round

Des Moines, Iowa - St. John's freshman Priscilla Frederick is tied for the lead with 16 other national high jump finalists after the first day of competition at the 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Drake University.
The freshman from Sicklerville, N.J., tied her career best height of 1.77 meters (5 feet 9.75 inches) to secure a spot among the nation's elite going into Friday's high jump finals. Frederick is tied with 16 others for first place. She is listed as fourth behind Elizabeth Patterson and Jasmin Day of Arizona and Raevan Harris of Auburn, respectively.
Frederick cleared the both the opening height of 1.70 meters (5 feet, 7 inches) and the second height of 1.74 meters (5 feet, 8.50 inches) on her first attempt. In the third round, she made the qualifying height of 1.77 meters on her third try.
Going into Wednesday's preliminaries, Frederick was ranked 25th of 27 competitors who declared for the NCAA Championships with a height of 1.76 meters, which she cleared at the NCAA Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla., two weeks ago. Sharon Day from California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo led the group with a qualifying distance of 1.95 meters.
Of the two other BIG EAST competitors in the event, Carin Knight of Connecticut, who came in second at the 2008 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in early May, will join Frederick at Friday's finals. Syracuse's Jillian Drouin, who was third on seed list, did not make the cut.
