DES MOINES, Iowa - St. John's freshman standout Priscilla Frederick finished tied in the top-12 in the high jump at the 2008 NCAA Track & Field Championships hosted by Drake University from June 11-14.
Frederick cleared the 1.77 meter mark (5 feet, 9.75 inches) which ties her personal best for the season.
"We're really proud of her, getting to the NCAA Finals as a freshman," remarked head coach Jim Hurt. "She is a really great athlete and has showed throughout this entire competition that she has the ability to compete with the top athletes in the country and represent St. John's on a high level. There are great things ahead in her future."
The Sicklerville, N.J., native tied for 12th with fellow BIG EAST foe, sophomore Carin Knight of Connecticut and Becky Christensen, a junior from Harvard.
Frederick cleared the opening height of 1.74 meters (5 feet, 8.50 inches) on her first try. It took two jumps to clear the 1.77 meter height. The freshman almost made 1.80 meters (5 feet, 10.75 inches) but hit the bar on the way down.
"She had a great jump at the 1.80 height," said Hurt. "She almost made it over. Overall, she performed super."
Sophomore Elizabeth Patterson from Arizona won the event with a height of 1.86 meters (6 feet, 1.25 inches).
Frederick was one of the top four freshmen in her event. Amber Kaufman from Hawaii finished fifth, while Ebba Jungmark of Washington State and Patience Coleman of North Carolina tied for ninth.
This weekend's championships are not the end of the season for Frederick. She is set to compete at the USA Track & Field Junior Nationals next weekend in Columbus, Ohio, to vie for a spot on the United States World Team, which will compete in Poland in mid-July.
