QUEENS, N.Y. - With the goal of traveling across the globe to Beijing in August, Grace Zollman and DeWayne Barrett, St. John's track & field alumni, had impressive performances at their respective countries' Olympic Team Trials this weekend.
Both Zollman, competing in the U.S. team trials, and Barrett, competing in the Jamaican team trials, finished in the top 20 in their respective events.
"We are quite proud of Grace and DeWayne and their efforts at the Olympic trials this past weekend," said head track & field coach Jim Hurt. "They have dedicated themselves over the past few years to reach the highest level of their sport in the United Sates and Jamaica. They are great representatives of our program here at St. John's and we appreciate all their hard work and sacrifices required to reach such a high level of competition."
Competing for a spot on the Jamaican team in Kingston, Jamaica, Barrett finished third in the 400-meter preliminary heat, crossing the tape at 46.81. In the semifinal heat he placed fifth, cutting his time by .48 seconds for a 46.33 finish. Barrett did not advance to the eight-man final; however, his semifinal finish placed him in the top 10 overall.
Zollman competed in the javelin at the United States Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. The Joseph, Ore., native placed ninth in the first flight of the javelin trials with a throw of 46.54 meters (152 feet, 8 inches), 19th overall. She entered the weekend ranked 19th on the javelin entry list with a mark of 51.06 meters (169 feet, 3.49"). Last year, Zollman placed 10th at the USA Outdoor Nationals.
