NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The St. John's men's tennis team split its two road matches this weekend, picking up a 5-2 win over Stony Brook on Friday before falling to No. 66 Yale by the same score on Saturday. With the 1-1 effort, the Red Storm moved to 9-8 overall, while the Seawolves fell to 5-4 and the Bulldogs improved to 10-5.
Against Stony Brook, STJ climbed out to an early 1-0 lead by earning the doubles point, and then tallied the next four wins in singles play to quickly clinch the match. Senior Asaf Honig led the way out of the top spot after his opponent, SBU's Halvar Dil, retired trailing 4-1, to give the Red Storm its first singles point and a 2-0 lead. Sophomores Pavel Cerny and Stefan Nikolic won their matches at No. 4 and 6, respectively, while junior Martin Kosut earned his team-leading 12th victory at the No. 5 spot in the 5-2 win.
The No. 66 Bulldogs took a 1-0 advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches to grab the early point. Despite singles wins by senior Gustavo Loza, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 over Connor Dawson, and freshman Milo Hauk, 6-2, 6-2 over Michael Caldwell at No. 3, the Yale lineup proved to be too much for St. John's to handle, as it went on to capture the 5-2 victory.
The Red Storm men's tennis team returns to action on Friday, April 3, in its first home match at the Courts at St. John's. STJ will square off against the Hawks of Monmouth University at 3 p.m.
