OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - NYIT plated six runs in the first inning en route to defeating the St. John's baseball team, 20-12. Carlos Del Rosario was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI, while Matt Wessinger had his second-straight four-hit game to pace St. John's (24-15). Jimmy Parque had two hits and two RBI, Paul Karmas had a two-run home run and Joe Panik added a solo home run for the Red Storm. Brian Smith, Sebastian Grazziani and Ryan Campbell had three RBI each to lead NYIT (15-23).
Smith led off a six-run first inning for NYIT with a single before Denten Neill laid down a bunt single, but the Bears ended up with runners on second and third after a throwing error. A wild pitch then brought in Smith and NYIT took a 1-0 lead. After a groundout, Christian Dienna drew a four-pitch walk before an RBI single by Greg Gilroy through the left side. Grazziani then belted a two-out, three-run home run to right center to give the Bears a 5-0 lead. Campbell followed with an RBI double before he was caught stealing third to end the inning.
Karmas put the Red Storm on the board in the top of second inning, leading off the frame by blasting an 0-1 pitch for a solo home run that bounced off the scoreboard in right center field. After Panik walked, Wessinger doubled into left center field. Del Rosario then roped an RBI single through the right side before Doran retired the next three batters in a row.
Neill beat out an infield single to open the bottom of the second before Effrey Valdez sent a home run to left field and NYIT led 8-2.
Parque extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a lead off double to open a three-run third. Following a single by Tim Morris, Karmas plated a run with an RBI fielder's choice. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Wessinger and Del Rosario made the score 8-5.
Grazziani walked to open a four-run third and Carroll followed with a bunt, but reached on an error. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch before Stephen Rivera (2-3) was lifted for Gabe Guerrero. Campbell greeted Guerrero with an RBI grounder through the right side. Smith followed with a three-run home run over the fence in right center to make it 12-5. Neill then doubled before Valdez singled and Dienna was plunked to load the bases. Gilroy then lifted what seemed to be a sacrifice fly, but on an appeal it was ruled that the runner left third early and there were two outs. Guerrero induced a ground out to end the frame.
Gino Matias led off the fourth with a single before Parque belted a two-run home run over the fence in right center field and St. John's trailed 12-7
St. John's added a run in the fifth when Wessinger led off with a single and Del Rosario lined an RBI double into right field.
NYIT went up 19-8 in after a seven-run sixth inning. Grazziani doubled to open the frame and scored on a Carroll RBI single into left field. Campbell followed with an RBI single off the foot of pitcher Rich Armento. After a strikeout, Campbell stole second and reached third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI double by Neill. Dienna then singled up the middle, once again off of Armento, to make it 16-8. Cos followed with a two-out, two-run triple to center field and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
St. John's added a run in the seventh and trailed 19-9. Karmas walked to open the inning before Panik fisted a single into center field and pinch hitter David Fallon walked to load the bases. Karmas would later score on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the seventh Karmas would make his collegiate debut on the mound. After Campbell singled and Smith doubled, Neill lifted a sacrifice fly into left field. Valdez then singled through the left side before Karmas induced an inning ending 5-4-3 double play.
St. John's added three more runs in ninth. After Panik launched a one-out solo home run to right center, Wessinger and Fallon reached on back-to-back singles. Matias plated a run with an RBI fielder's choice, before Scott Ferrara followed with an RBI single.
The Red Storm hosts FDU at 6 p.m. on April 29.
