QUEENS, N.Y. - A pair of future St. John's track & field athletes were in action last weekend at the Pan American Junior Championships and the USA Track & Field Junior Olympic Championships, respectively.
Alexis Bean, an incoming freshman distance runner from Bermuda, competed in the Pan American Junior Championships being held in Trinidad and Tobago. Bean finished ninth in the 1500-meter finals with a time 5:32.61. She was the first Red Storm athlete to compete in the Championships since Venisa Clarke-Lee four years ago.
"We are very excited that Alexis had the opportunity to compete against the best runners in the Western hemisphere at the Pan American games," said track and field coach Jim Hurt. "Finishing ninth is an outstanding achievement."
Bean's new Red Storm teammate, Stephanie Barnes of Long Island, N.Y., was also in action at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Championships in Greensboro, N.C. Barnes recorded a distance of 11.11 meters in the triple jump finals of the Young Women division, finishing in 17th place.
"We are very pleased that Stephanie competed in the Junior Olympics," said Hurt. "We look forward to Alexis and Stephanie making a major impact as incoming freshmen."
Bean and Barnes will join the two-time reigning Metropolitan Outdoor Championship Red Storm squad. Last year's cross country and track & field teams tallied 31 BIG EAST qualifiers, 18 ECAC qualifiers, seven All-BIG EAST athletes and 12 All-East athletes. Red Storm athletes set a total of four new school records on the season.
