QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's junior Priscilla Frederick made her season debut in action at the Yale Invitational at the Coxe Cage in New Haven, Conn. on Saturday.
Frederick, who qualified for the NCAA Championships in the high jump last season as a sophomore, placed first in the high jump with a mark of 1.76 meters for her first event victory this season. That height qualified Frederick for both the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships.
Frederick didn't stop there as she also finished third overall and qualified for the BIG EAST in the long jump with a distance of 5.55 meters. She also placed fourth in the shot put (11.45 meters) and sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.14 seconds).
Freshman Rikka Lovely, who set a personal-best time in the 60-meter dash yesterday, could not match that time as she finished eighth in the event with a time of 7.77 seconds.
Five Red Storm runners competed in the 400-meter dash with junior Rene Cousins leading the way with a time of 58.87 seconds and a third place overall finish. Junior Lauren Wynter finished in 59.39 for 11th place and freshman Molly Ellis crossed the line simultaneously for a 12th place finish. Senior Asia Nettles placed 15th and clocked in at 59.50, and junior Vanessa Thompson was 21st at 1:01.11.
Junior Kim Piard led all STJ runners in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:18.28 to finish third overall. Junior Sarah Sudbury finished sixth and senior Pamela Petruski finished 10th.
In the 3,000-meter race, sophomore Nicole Cocozza turned in a time of 11:15.26 and senior Sarah Fry ran 11:29.60.
In the field events, freshman Stephanie Barnes took home her first career event victory by finishing tops in the triple jump with a BIG EAST-qualifying distance of 11.37 meters. Junior Bintou Dibba placed fifth with 10.4 meters and senior Fayanne Francis finished in 10.06 meters.
Sophomore Chanel King finished third in both the shot put and weight throw and junior Courtney Kolinsky went 19th and 14th.
Over the past two days, St. John's tallied a total of seven qualifiers for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships. The Red Storm returns to the Armory next Saturday, Jan. 16, for the Armory 8-Way.
