STJ Finishes Regular Season With Two-Game Road Trip

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's will finish its 2010 regular season with a two-game road trip taking the Red Storm from Tampa, Fla., to Milwaukee, Wis. in two days. The Red Storm will play the USF Bulls on Friday, Oct. 22 in an evening game before playing No. 16/16 Marquette on Sunday afternoon in Wisconsin.
Weekend Notes
The Red Storm (6-8-2, 3-5-1 BIG EAST) leads the all-time series record with USF, 3-2. However, in Tampa, USF has won both games: the first in the teams' first meeting in 2005 with a 3-2 overtime battle. The last time the squads played in Tampa (Oct. 14, 2007); the Bulls pulled out a 4-2 victory over the Red Storm. Last season's game was a double-overtime match up at Belson Stadium. STJ won 1-0 with a game-winning goal in the 102nd minute, scored by Courtney Lane (Oct. 23, 2009).
Marquette (12-3-2, 9-0 BIG EAST) has a 5-0 advantage in the series slate with St. John's. STJ is 0-2 against Marquette in Milwaukee. All but one game in teh five-game series has been decided by one goal. Last season, the then-No. 18 Golden Eagles defeated St. John's 1-0, with a goal scored in the 86th minute. Kristin Russell had nine saves to Marquette's Natalie Kulla's seven. Courtney Lane had five shots, four on goal.
St. John's was unbeaten in the Red Storm's final home weekend of 2010. STJ defeated Seton Hall with a goal in the 77th minute. Rookie Kerry Cummings scored her first goal of her career, she was assisted by junior Jen Leaverton and rookie Morgan Ritter. Junior Kristin Russell had 11 saves over the weekend, with four against Seton Hall and seven against Rutgers in the 0-0 tie.
Scouting The Competition
USF went 2-0-0 last week, including a 1-0 win against Louisville on Oct.15 and a 1-0 win against Cincinnati on Oct. 17. The Bulls' nine wins tie last year's mark for the most under head coach Denise Schilte-Brown.
The Bulls' 27 goals on the season are the most since 2002 when they scored 28. It is tied for the fifth most in USF history. Junior F/M Venicia Reed assisted on both gamewinning goals last week. She has a team best six assists in the season good for 18 points.
USF is on a two-game win streak and is four points ahead of the Red Storm in the BIG EAST playoff picture.
Chelsea Klotz leads USF in scoring with 21 points (10g, 1a). Klotz has had four game-winners in 2010. Helping Klotz is Venicia Reid with 18 points (6g, 6a), she is also the Bulls' assists leader.
The No. 18 Marquette Golden Eagles are on a nine-game winning streak since defeating USF 2-1 on Sept. 17. The last time Marquette lost was on Sept. 11 vs. the then-No. 10 BYU Cougars, 2-1.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 4-3 overtime win vs. Louisville last weekend. The goals were evenly distributed among starters Rachael Sloan, Kerry McBride, Ashley Bares and Rosie Malone-Povolny. Louisville took a 2-0 lead before the Golden Eagles came back to win in overtime.
Maegen Kelly, a key reserve, leads the team in scoring with 15 points (6g, 3a). Ashley Bares accounts for 12 points (5g, 2a). In goal, Natalie Kulla has recorded six shutouts for a 12-3-2 record with 46 saves and 0.79 GAA.

Oct. 6, senior midfielder Nicole Pasciolla was tabbed one of the top 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. She was selected from a candidate field of 30 who were named in August. Nationwide fan voting began on Oct. 6 through Nov. 14 as fans will be able to vote once per day to count for 1/3 of the vote.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, character, community and competition.
Pasciolla is an economics major with a GPA of 3.96. She is a member of the prestigious President's Society and president of the St. John's student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC). She is also a three-time All-BIG EAST selection.
Some Notes From Seton Hall
he 1-0 victory against Seton Hall was the second-straight Friday night home victory for the Red Storm. Five out of six wins for the Red Storm this season have been 1-0 contests. All six wins were one-goal victories. 12 of the 15 games played have been one-goal decisions. The 1-0 shutout was the sixth for the Red Storm defense this season.
Junior Kristin Russell recorded her sixth shutout of the season, as she advanced her overall record to 5-8-1. Russell had four saves in goal and advanced her season tally to 60. Overall, Russell has 26 career shutouts and 234 saves. Her career record is 26-19-8. Already the all-time shutout record-holder, Russell moved up to No. 5 in all-time saves.
BIG EAST Playoff Picture
With 10 points, the Red Storm is one point away from the possible three-way tie for the final spot for the BIG EAST Tournament in the American Division. Providence and Syracuse are ahead of STJ with 11 points. Marquette and West Virginia have secured their spot in the playoffs all the way to the quarterfinals. In the National Division, both Notre Dame and Georgetown also secured first-round byes.
USF is currently No. 4 in the BIG EAST rankings.
Russell Tabs Second BIG EAST Weekly Honor
Junior goalkeeper Kristin Russell was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll on Oct. 18, after posting two shut outs behind the goal line for the Red Storm after a 1-0-1 BIG EAST weekend. Russell (5-8-2) was instrumental in St. John's gaining four points in the BIG EAST standings after a 1-0 victory over Seton Hall (Oct. 15) and a 0-0 double-overtime time with Rutgers (Oct. 17). The junior tallied 11 saves for the weekend, which advanced her season tally to 64 and her career record to 240. For her career, Russell has recorded 27 shutouts.
First Career-Goal For Cummings
Rookie Kerry Cummings scored the game-winner in Friday's contest vs. Seton Hall, marking her first career goal and points. Freshmen have scored three game-winners out of St. John's total of seven. Along with Cummings, classmate Amy Marron has scored two-game-winning goals.
Leaverton & Ritter Set Up GW vs. Seton Hall
Rookie Morgan Ritter and junior Jen Leaverton were awarded the assists on Cummings goal. The goal opportunity cam e off a corner kick, taken by Ritter then headed to Leaverton, who headed it with Cummings. It was Leaverton and Ritter's first assist of the season. Leaverton has three assists for her career.

STJ will look to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament this weekend. Currently, the Red Storm are No. 7 in the American Division rankings, but one-point behind the tie for the fifth-place spot (11 points), shared by Providence and Syracuse.
