QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's cross country and track & field coach Jim Hurt has announced that former Red Storm thrower Blessing Egwu has been hired as an assistant coach.
Egwu will work primarily with the throwers, while also assisting in the team's strength work and performing a variety of recruiting and administrative tasks.
"We are very excited to have Blessing join our coaching staff," Hurt said. "She brings a lot of energy, a great work ethic and a tremendous background in St. John's track & field. She will be a great help to volunteer assistant coach Martin Nutty with the throwers, while also serving as a significant asset for us on the recruiting trail. We are fortunate that she will continue in the St. John's track & field family."
A former Red Storm athlete, Egwu is the St. John's school record-holder in the hammer throw with a top throw of 196 feet 6 inches at the 2006 Penn Relays. She also ranks second all-time in the indoor shot put and weight throw and fourth all-time in the outdoor shot put.
Egwu won the 2005 and 2006 BIG EAST titles in the outdoor hammer throw, while earning All-BIG EAST honors in the shot put, weight throw and hammer throw. She earned All-EAST honors at the 2006 Indoor and Outdoor ECAC Championships.
Egwu participated in the 2006 NCAA Championships, representing the Red Storm in the hammer throw in Sacramento, Calif.
In 2006, Egwu was named a National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American.
While competing as a member of the Nigerian national team, Egwu captured a bronze medal in the hammer throw at the 2006 African Games.
From 2008 to 2010, Egwu worked as a graduate assistant with the St. John's strength and conditioning program. Working under Director of Strength and Conditioning coach Rob Basile, Egwu helped instruct student-athletes in the fundamentals of lifting and core strength exercises.
Egwu received her undergraduate degree in sports management from St. John's in 2005. She completed her graduate work at St. John's in May of 2010, earning a master's degree in sports management.
