QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's cross country coach Jim Hurt has announced the schedule for the 2010 cross country season.
The team will open its fall campaign by traveling to Chicago, Ill., to take part in the Vincentian Cup Invitational on Sept. 4. The meet, hosted by DePaul University, will bring together DePaul, Niagara and St. John's on the 350th anniversary of the death of St. Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac.
Along with the meet on Saturday, the three teams will take part in a community service project and a tour of downtown Chicago over the course of the weekend.
St. John's will return to New York to compete in the C.W. Post Invite on Sept. 18. The 5K race will take place at the campus of C.W. Post in Brookville, N.Y. on Long Island. The Red Storm will then participate in the Paul Short Invite for the second straight year on Oct. 1 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
One week later, St. John's will head to the newly-renovated Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx for the Metropolitan Championships. Last season, the Red Storm finished sixth out of the 14 New York-area schools that participated in the meet.
On Sunday, Oct. 17, the Red Storm will again host the annual STJ Fall Festival at Cunningham Park near the St. John's Queens campus. The 4K race will be preceded by a fun run to raise money for Breast Cancer Research. The day will conclude with an alumni reception on campus in the D'Angelo Center.
This year's BIG EAST Championships, to be held on Oct. 30, will take place in Syracuse, N.Y.
"We are very excited about the 2010 cross country schedule, as it offers our team the opportunity to compete at great venues against the best runners in the United States," said Hurt. "The Vincentian Cup in Chicago, the Metropolitan and ECAC Championships at historic Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, Paul Short at Lehigh, and the BIG EAST Championships at Syracuse will prepare our team well for NCAA competition in November."
St. John's will compete in the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Nov. 13 at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, Conn. The meet will be hosted jointly by Yale and Fairfield.
The ECAC Championships take place on Nov. 20 in the Bronx at familiar Van Cortlandt Park, while the 2010 NCAA Championships will again be hosted by Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind.
St. John's will look to see improved success with this year's campaign after only losing one runner to graduation. Senior Sarah Sudbury, redshirt senior Pamela Petruski, junior Nicole Cocozza, junior Aryon Trujillo, and sophomore Michelle Duffy all finished first for the team in different meets last season.
