QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's track & field team will travel to the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston, Mass., for this weekend's ECAC Indoor Championships.
The Red Storm will start 11 different athletes in ten events as the team hopes to improve on last year's 14-point performance.
Senior Priscilla Frederick returns to the meet as the defending champion in the high jump. She is coming off a successful month of competition where she won the BIG EAST high jump title (Feb. 19) and placed third in the USATF Indoor National Championships (Feb. 26). Her top jump of 1.82 meters is currently seeded second at the meet. She is also seeded fourth in the pentathlon, an event in which she finished second at the BIG EAST Championships.
Sophomore Molly Ellis has become the face of the Red Storm sprint corps after her dramatic come-from-behind win in the 400-meter dash finals at the BIG EAST Championships (Feb. 19). That time of 55.04 seconds is currently ranked eighth among ECAC qualifiers.
St. John's will enter three competitors in the 500-meter race, led by senior Kim Piard. Piard raced to a season-best time of 1:15.69 at the Metropolitan Championships (Jan. 28). Senior Lauren Wynter has been solid in the 500-meters all season, winning at the Princeton Quad Meet (Jan. 6) and running a career-best time of 1:15.81 at the Metropolitan Championships (Jan. 28). Freshman Shayna Presley qualified for the meet at the NYRR Saturday Night at the Armory (Feb. 12), with a first-place time of 1:16.00.
Senior co-captain Sarah Sudbury represents the Red Storm in the 800-meters, after making the qualifying mark with a time of 2:14.24 just last weekend at the Armory. That performance currently stands as her career-best time in the event.
Senior Vanessa Thompson will run in the 60-meter hurdles where she ran a career-best time of 8.55 seconds at the Bill Ward Invitational (Dec. 8).
In the field events, junior co-captain Chanel King leads the Red Storm throwers in the shot put and weight throw. King placed fifth in the weight throw at the BIG EAST Championships (Feb. 19), her highest career finish at that meet. Freshman Angela Onye will join King in the weight throw with her best season throw coming in at 16.17 meters.
St. John's will enter teams in two relays, led by the 4x800-meter squad that earned All-BIG EAST status by placing fifth at last month's Championships. Sudbury, Piard, Nicole Cocozza and Michelle Duffy have run the relay in 9:03.67 which is just a second off the school record. In the 4x400-meter relay, Ellis, Wynter, Rene Cousins and Presley ran 3:50.30 at the BIG EAST Championships (Feb. 19).
Last season, St. John's finished 22nd at the ECAC Championships with 14 points.
