PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -St. John's boasted two Top 10 finishes at the historic Penn Relays in action from Thursday, April 28, to Saturday, April 30, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Junior captain Chanel King competed in three different events and took home a fifth-place finish in the shot put with a top distance of 13.30 meters. Freshman Natasha Amazan placed 10th in the shot with a BIG EAST-qualifying toss of 12.93 meters.
Sophomore Stephanie Barnes leaped to a season-best distance of 11.49 meters in the triple jump, placing 19th overall.
In relays on Thursday, the distance medley team of Sarah Sudbury, Molly Ellis, Kim Piard and Michelle Duffy placed 11th with a time of 12:14.32, the team's best outdoor time this season.
In the 4x100-meter relay, the Red Storm squad of Ellis, Rene Cousins, Rikka Lovely and Corrine Williams ran a time of 47.28 seconds, the best time this season in an event in which St. John's has already qualified for the ECAC Championships.
On Friday, the Red Storm 4x200-meter relay team of Ellis, Cousins, Vanessa Thompson and Williams crossed the line in 1:38.76 to advance to the ECAC category finals with a 16th place finish. The race was just the first time that any of the competitors had run that distance this season.
On Saturday, that squad ran well again but could not get a handoff in the final stretches to finish in sixth place in the finals with a time of 1:38.92.
The 4x800-meter relay squad of Sudbury, Piard, Nicole Cocozza and Duffy also ran on Saturday, qualifying for the ECAC Championships with a time of 9:11.47.
St. John's will participate in the last meet before the BIG EAST Championships on Sunday, May 1, on the campus of Yale University.
