PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After leading the St. John's men's tennis team to one of its most successful campaigns in program history, head coach Eric Rebhuhn was named the 2011 BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year, while junior Milo Hauk and sophomore Mike Lampa were tabbed to the all-conference squad for the third and second-consecutive season, respectively, as announced by conference officials on Wednesday afternoon.
Rebhuhn led the Red Storm to a program record 17 wins and a fourth-place BIG EAST finish in 2011. St. John's also defeated a program-best three ranked opponents and earned its first national ranking this season on March 8. STJ concluded the campaign at No. 75 in the national poll.
"It's an honor to be the recipient of an award of this magnitude," said the 10-year head coach. "It's an indication of how hard this team and its coaching staff worked all season long. We were really able to come together and use the national ranking as inspiration to make this one of the best seasons in our program's history."
Rebhuhn also recorded his 100th victory with the Red Storm this season, a 5-2 win over Dartmouth on Feb. 18, and now has 115 wins at STJ.
Hauk, who led St. John's with a 17-5 record in singles play, has now been named to the All-BIG EAST team every year of his three-year career. The New York native's 17-5 record included a 14-3 mark at the No. 2 and 3 singles positions combined. He also added a team-high 15 wins in doubles play, including nine at the top doubles spot.
Lampa, the defending BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Year, adds his second-straight All-BIG EAST honor. The New Jersey native finished his sophomore campaign by winning nine of 10 singles matches for a total of 16 wins, including seven at the No. 3 singles position.
"I'm extremely proud of both Milo [Hauk] and Mike [Lampa]," said Rebhuhn. "Whether its early morning runs with graduate assistant Derek Wallensteen or a BIG EAST Conference match, they both work hard to get better everyday. We won't rest on our laurels and are already looking forward to the 2011 fall season."
