HAMILTON, Bermuda - St. John's record holder and rising junior Alexis Bean claimed the title in the 1500-meter run at the 2011 Bermuda National Track & Field Championships on Sunday, June 11, at the National Stadium in Hamilton, Bermuda.
Bean, who was running for Team Platinum Force at the event, clocked in a time of 4:59.54 to win the event. Bean, who missed most of the Red Storm's outdoor season with a knee injury, is part of St. John's 4 x 800-meter relay team that set a school record at the 2009 BIG EAST Indoor Championships with a time of 9:02.92.
"We are very proud of Alexis and her 1500-meter championship run at the Bermuda National Championship," said St. John's head track & field coach Jim Hurt. Alexis has battled a knee injury most of this season, but her determination and persistence has driven her to win a national championship."
St. John's track & field has had a terrific week at the national level as senior Priscilla Frederick leaped to a seventh place finish in the high jump and aluma Grace Zollman placed 13th in the javelin at the USA Track & Field Championships at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The Red Storm's 200-meter and 400-meter record holder DeWayne Barrett also placed sixth in the 400-meter run at the Jamaican Championships in Kingston, Jamaica.
With their efforts, Bean, Frederick and Barrett have qualified for their national team's pool for international competitions this summer such as the Central American and Caribbean Championships in July, the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, and the Pan American Games in Mexico in October.
"We are very excited about the success of current and former St. John's track & field athletes at national championships over the past couple weeks," said Hurt. "We take great pride in developing athletes in the jumps, sprints, throws and distance areas. Alexis, Priscilla, Grace and DeWayne are successful examples of that effort at their national championships. We look forward to following their progress as they move onto international competition this summer."
