QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's will close out its four-game home stand hosting Yale for the first time since 2005. It is only the fourth-ever meeting between the two teams.
The Red Storm (3-2-1) is looking to continue its success and extend its two-game win streak to three games after defeating fellow New York State opponents, Albany and Columbia in NYC Classic tournament action. St. John's is also riding a two-game shutout streak.
Sunday's Quick Kicks
Yale (1-1-2) will be playing its second-straight BIG EAST opponent, after losing to Rutgers, 1-0 on Friday night. The Bulldogs will also be playing their second-consecutive road game after playing its first games on the season at home.
Sunday's game is the last non-conference match St. John's will play for the season. So far, St. John's is 3-2-1 in non-conference action. BIG EAST play begins on Thursday, Sept. 15 on the road against Providence.
St. John's will air all of its home games this season on StormTracker All-Access (subscription) on RedStormSports.com. Sunday's play-by-play will be called by James Coluccio, with analyst and Red Storm men's soccer alum Derby Carrillo. Fans can tune in for a monthly fee of $9.95 or an annual subscription of $79.95. Sunday's game-day promotion is ROTC Day and Military, FDNY and NYPD Appreciation night. All military, FDNY and NYPD personnel get a free ticket to the game when they show their ID at the ticket window.
Following the women's game, the men will also play Yale. The slated game time in the second game of the Red Storm-Bulldogs doubleheader is 7:30 p.m.
Scouting The Bulldogs
Yale has only played four games to St. John's six this season so far. The Bulldogs are 1-1-2 and played its season-first road game at Rutgers on Friday. Yale defeated Marist in the season opener, 2-0, then followed the victory with two ties. The Bulldogs played Providence to a scoreless tie, but was 1-1 against Sacred Heart.
The Bulldogs have been led by rookie scoring as freshman Meredith Speck leads Yale with four points off two goals. Speck scored against Marist and Sacred Heart. Classmate Georgiana Wageman has also netted a goal for the Bulldogs.
Yale is 0-1-1 against BIG EAST opponents in 2011.
Last season, the Bulldogs finished 8-8-1 and finished sixth in the Ivy League at 3-4-0. Eight starters and 12 letterwinners return in 2011.
In goal for the Bulldogs is returning junior Adele Jackson-Gibson. Gibson has tallied 20 saves in net so far in 2011.
Bulldogs vs. Red Storm - The Series
Sunday's meeting is just the fourth ever between the two teams. Yale leads the series 2-1. The last time St. John's defeated Yale was in the squads' first meeting on Nov. 13, 1999. The Red Storm won 2-0 in New Haven. The last time Yale visited Queens was on Sept. 6, 2005. St. John's lost to the Bulldogs, 1-0 in an overtime match.
Last time they met on Sept. 7, 2008, Yale scored in the 83rd minute for the 1-0 win.
StormTracker - Last Time Out
St. John's finished second in the fourth-ever NYC Classic, defeating Albany and Columbia and not allowing one goal to score. Hofstra won the tournament on goal-differential, defeating Albany 5-0. Senior Megan Klement was named Defensive MVP of the tournament, while Jen Leaverton and Jen Gibbons were also named to the All-Tournament team.
The Red Storm easily defeated Albany, 2-0 on Sept. 2 with goals by Leaverton and senior Raelynne Lee. On Sunday, it was a game-winning penalty kick that defeated Columbia, 1-0. Gibbons drew the foul in the box that led to the game-winning shot attempt.
Stat Of The Weekend
30: Kristin Russell tops the charts with 30 shutouts in her four-year career as the Red Storm's starting goalkeeper. She is 12 shutouts above St. John's No. 2 in shutouts, Tina Fogg and Jamie Beran. Russell's last three games have been shutouts (2-0-1).
Russell is also one win away from hitting the 30-career wins mark. With one more win, she ties Fogg for St. John's all-time career wins record-holder.
Against The Ivy League
Yale is the second competitor St. John's will face against the Ivy League this season. Last week, the Red Storm defeated Columbia, 1-0, with a game-winning penalty kick in the second half.
Since 2008, the last time St. John's and Yale played each other, the Red Storm is 2-3-1 against Ivy League opponents.
Triple-Award Week
On Sept. 5, the Red Storm had not one but two student-athletes earn BIG AST Weekly honors. Junior Megan Klement was named Defensive Player of the Week and Chelsey Martino earned Rookie of the Week honors. It was a first-time BIG EAST honor for both players. Klement was the Defensive MVP in the NYC Classic and played all 270 minutes in a three-game week, allowing opponents to just one goal; while Martino netted the Red Storm's goal against then-No. 4 Virginia.
The last time St. John's earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors was Tara Mendoza on Sept. 14, 2009. The Red Storm's last BIG EAST Rookie of the Week was Martino's teammate, Raelynne Lee on Sept. 19, 2007.
Goalkeeper Kristin Russell was also named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll after her double-shut out, 2-1-0 week in the net. It was Russell's eighth BIG EAST weekly honor, her first of the season.
Red Storm Regionally Ranked
St. John's is ranked No. 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Northeast Regional Division I poll. It is the first time this season the Red Storm has entered the rankings. The Red Storm joins fellow BIG EAST opponents Notre Dame (1), Marquette (2), Villanova (4), Georgetown (5), Rutgers (6), Connecticut (7) and West Virginia (8) on the Northeast Regional poll; while Seton Hall is receiving votes.
Career Firsts
GOALS: Senior Anna Torregiano's penalty-kick game-winner was her first-ever career goal (Sept. 5 vs. Columbia). Rookie Chelsey Martino's goal against Virginia (Aug. 30) was her first collegiate point and goal. Classmate Deanna Murino scored her first collegiate point against George Mason (Aug. 22).
ASSISTS: Junior Patrice Casimir tallied her first collegiate assist against GMU.
Welcome Back!
The St. John's women's soccer program has scheduled its annual Alumnae Day for Friday, Oct. 14 against BIG EAST-foe Marquette. At halftime, St. John's will honor Jen Contesini (1993-1997) who is No. 2 in the program's all-time career assist records. Contesini is also No. 1 in the St. John's record books for assists in a season with 11 (1996) and is tied for the single game record for assists in a game when she had four against Fordham on Sept. 6, 1995. Contesini played from 1993-1997 and tallied 52 points on 14 goals and 24 assists. Contesini was also a part of head coach Ian Stone's inaugural season and his 1994 BIG EAST Championship team.

St. John's will kick off BIG EAST play with a road trip to the home of the league, Providence, R.I. The Red Storm and Friars will compete in a mid-week match up on Thursday, Sept. 15. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
