Red Storm Completes Competition At Penn Relays

In an event that attracts the best track & field athletes from around the globe, St. John's put together a number of standout performances over the past weekend at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
Priscilla Frederick achieved the Red Storm's best finish with a second place 1.80 meter effort in the Championship of America high jump division. The field featured fourteen entrants from colleges all across the United States and one from Canada. Frederick was topped by only Ann Dudley of Middle Tennessee State who was able to clear the winning mark of 1.84 meters on her second attempt.
"We are very excited to have Priscilla in the place second in the high jump and our two sprint relays in the finals," said head track & field coach Jim Hurt. "The Penn Relays is the very top of track & field competition and we are proud of our team's ability to compete on such a national stage."
The 4x200-meter relay team of Rikka Lovely, Corrine Williams, Maya Lewis and Trudy-Ann McLean qualified for the ECAC division finals with a preliminary time of 1:40.39. The quartet then came back in the finals with a fifth place finish of 1:39.72.
The 4x100-meter relay squad of Lovely, McLean, Williams and Frederick made it to the finals with an initial heat of 47.07 seconds. The preliminary time was 27th best out of over 80 participating teams. Unfortunately, a zone infraction in the finals disqualified St. John's.
In field events Chanel King placed twelfth in the hammer throw (168' 11"), fourteenth in the shot put (44' 2 1/2") and 22nd in the discus (133' 3"). Natasha Amazan placed eleventh in the shot put with a 44' 11 1/2" effort.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Claire Mooney, Shayna Presley, Lovely and McLean ran a 3:50.73 to take eighth in their heat and 45th overall.
Nicole Cocozza, Michelle Duffy, Aryon Trujillo and Alexis Bean ran a 9:21.58 in the 4x800-meter relay to finish 18th.
