QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's soccer team will conclude its three-match homestand on Friday as it hosts the Brown Bears in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m. as the Red Storm (2-2-0) looks to stay undefeated in Friday games, while the Bears (0-0-0) will be opening their 2012 campaign.
Coming off a weekend in which it defeated Air Force, 2-1, in a thrilling overtime victory, then fell, 3-0, to Stony Brook, the Red Storm will be looking to gain momentum with just three matches left until BIG EAST play begins.
The game will be broadcast live on the St. John's Television Network, STJ-TV, with Tony "the voice of St. John's" Luftman and former women's soccer standout Sarah McGrath on the call. Video and live stats for the matchup can be accessed on RedStormSports.com
All students are invited to come out to Belson before the game for a pre-game barbecue presented by RedZone.
Scouting The Bears
- Brown enters its 2012 season off a 10-5-2 campaign in 2011, where it finished fourth in the Ivy League. The Bears will be returning their top-three point scorers from 2011 in senior forward and captain Eliza Marshall, sophomore forward Kirsten Berg and sophomore forward Chloe Cross. Marshall is coming off a 15-point season in 2011 where she tallied a team-high six goals and added three assists.
- Junior goalkeeper MC Barrett returns after playing in all 17 games, recording 51 saves and a .864 save percentage to account for eight of the teams wins with two clean sheets.
- The head coach of Brown is Phil Pincince, the 13th-winningest coach in NCAA Division I history. He is the longest standing current coach in the game with a lifetime record of 294-224-48 with 12 Ivy League titles in 35 years.
Tracking the Storm
- St. John's is 2-0 so far in 2012 on Friday nights, and has posted a 2-1 record in the confines of Belson Stadium.
- All four St. John's goals this season have been scored by different players in Morgan Ritter, Hailey Hemmer, Runa Stefansdottir and Emily Cubbage. Cubbage and Ritter are tied for the team points lead as they both assisted on the goal by Stefansdottir in the win over Air Force.
- Red Storm freshman have stepped up early and often for St. John's. Along with Cubbage helping the attack, rookie goalkeeper Ellen Conway has been a valuable asset between the pipes in injured Lauren Ferris' stead, recording 13 saves in two starts for a .722 save percentage. In the midfield, Shelby Halász has been a strong presence off the bench, assisting on Hemmer's goal against George Mason, while Diamond Thomas made her first career start for head coach Ian Stone's squad against Stony Brook. Cubbage and Thomas have taken a combined four shots in 2012, all of which have been on target.
Up Next
- St. John's will be off until next Friday when they travel within New York City for a Friday night matchup at Fordham and a Sunday game at Columbia.
