Women's Soccer Faces UCF In NCAA Tournament First Round

ORLANDO, Fla.- St. John's women's soccer makes its return to the NCAA Tournament on Saturday at 7 p.m. when the Red Storm (11-5-3) play at UCF in the First Round. This is only the second time in program history that head coach Ian Stone the Red Storm have earned an at-large bid to the tournament.

- St. John's earned an at-large bid to the program's second-ever NCAA Tournament and will play at UCF on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.

- The Red Storm enters Saturday's match with an 11-5-3 (4-3-2 BIG EAST) overall record after reaching the BIG EAST Semifinals where St. John's fell 2-0 at Marquette.
- This is the first meeting between St. John's and UCF.
- St. John's four losses have all come on the road being shutout 4-0 at No. 15 GeorgeÂÂtown, losing 2-1 (OT) at Butler, falling 3-1 at Marquette and dropping a 1-0 decision to Ohio State. The Buckeyes earned the win on Sept. 15 as part of the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana University.
- At home, St. John's has not lost in its previous 11 outings.
- The Red Storm has only allowed 18 goals all season, and had only allowed two heading into the Marquette game. St. John's owns a Goals- Against Average of 0.91 and Save Percentage of 0.798.
- Rachel Daly was a unanimous selection as the BIG EAST Offensive Player and Newcomer of the Year.
- Rachel Daly was a unanimous pick to the 2013 All-BIG EAST First Team and joined on the squad by Georgia Kearney-Perry. Amy Marron was tabbed to the 2013 All-BIG EAST Second Team and Diana Poulin was selected to the Third Team.
- UCF enters Friday's match against St. John's ranked No. 16 in the NSCAA rankings with a 16-2-4 overall record.
- St. John's 6-0-0 start was its best since 2004. In 2007, the Red Storm started 6-0-2.
- 2013 is the 20th season for head coach Ian Stone. During his tenure, Stone has guided St. John's to a BIG EAST and ECAC Championship, an NCAA Tournament berth, 11 BIG EAST Tournaments and 180 wins.
Scouting the Knights
- UCF enters Saturday's NCAA First Round match up against St. John's at 16-2-4, 8-0-1 AAC after claiming the American Athletic Conference title on penalty kicks against Rutgers on Nov. 10.
- The Knights, the No. 3 seed in their region, have not lost in their previous 18 matches. Their last loss came at the hands of Florida St. in TalÂÂlahassee, Fla., 1-0 (OT), on Sept. 1.
- Senior keeper Lianne Maldonado ranks seventh in the country in goals-against average (.479) and is the reigning NSCAA Player of the Week.
- Junior forward Tatiana Coleman, freshman mid Kayla Adamek and freshman forward Lena Petermann combine for 26 goals and 66 points to lead the balanced UCF attack.
- The Knights are outscoring their opponents 50-11 this season.
St. John's vs. UCF - The Series
- Saturday's match in Orlando, Fla. will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
- UCF will be making their 18th appearance in the NCAA Tournament while the Red Storm will be making its second in program history.
BIG EAST Accolades Galore
- Sophomore Rachel Daly's historic season continued on Thursday, Nov. 7, when she was named the BIG EAST OffenÂÂsive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year by a vote of the league's head coaches.
- The Harrogate, England native became only the second player in conference history to win both awards in the same season. Seton Hall's Kelly Smith won took home the two honors in 1997.
- Daly and junior defender Georgia Kearney-Perry were named All-BIG EAST First Team.
- Senior forward Amy Marron, a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection, was named to the Second Team while freshman keeper Diana Poulin was selected to the All-BIG EAST Third Team.
- With the honor, Marron became the only Red Storm women's soccer player to earn three straight conference accolades.
All-Tournament Team Nods
- Seniors Sarah Ashmore and Hailey Hemmer were named to the 2013 BIG EAST All-Tournament Team after guiding the St. John's backline in the squad's run to the BIG EAST Semifinals.
- Ashmore and Hemmer have been staples of the St. John's defense and played a major role in the Red Storm shutting out its opponents 10 times and limiting challengÂÂers to just 0.95 goals per game this season. In the BIG EAST Tournament, St. John's allowed only four goals and held opponents to a .095 shot percentage.
- The defenders are only the third and fourth St. John's women's soccer players to be named to the conference tourÂÂnament squad.
