FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's tennis team controlled their match against LIU Brooklyn in both singles and doubles from start to finish as they defeated the previously unbeaten Blackbirds, 6-1, on Friday at the National Tennis Center.
Senior Ksenia Mikhaylova started off the Red Storm's strong play in singles at the No. 5 slot. With the first set under her belt, Mikhaylova fell in a 5-2 hole in the second before coming back to take the set, 7-5.
Senior Nevena Selakovic, freshman Amber Washington and senior Diamond Adams took their matches at first, second and third singles respectively to clinch the match for St. John's. Selakovic has won six of her last eight matches, all coming at the No. 1 slot.
Senior Terri Thomas cushioned the Red Storm lead at the No. 6 slot with the 6-2, 6-0 win over the Blackbirds' Brittany Thompson.
At No. 2 doubles, Nevena Selakovic and Ksenia Mikhaylova gave St. John's the early advantage with a convincing 8-2 victory. The 8-6 win from Amber Washington and Diamond Adams at first doubles clinched the doubles point for the Red Storm.
