Seniors Honored At St. John's Monday Meeting

The best of St. John's track & field was on display at the annual Monday Meeting on Monday, April 1 as the Red Storm won eight events and acknowledged its group of seniors.
The program honored its eight dedicated seniors, Marisela Acevedo, Stephanie Barnes, Alexis Bean, Michelle Duffy, Molly Ellis, Rikka Lovely, Trudy-Ann McLean and Adara Simonelli, with a ceremony during the meet.
A number of the city's local colleges competed against the Red Storm as ASA College, Bronx Community College, Monroe College, York College, Nassau Community College, Staten Island College, St. Thomas Aquinas, Pratt Institute, Dominican College, CCNY, Kingsborough Community College and representatives from a number of area track clubs were in attendance.
Duffy turned in the top performance from the senior group as she won the 1500-meter run at 5:03.48 just .02 seconds ahead of freshman Kerri Butler. Stephanie Van Pelt placed third at 5:11.99 and Ashlin Conroy rounded out the Red Storm contingent with a 5:21.06 split.
St. John's claimed an exciting victory in the 4x100-meter relay as Lovely, LaTasha Collins, Corrine Williams and Ellis combined for a 47.7 second time.
The Red Storm entered 10 runners into the 800-meter field and claimed the top nine spots. Normally a short sprinter, Claire Mooney captured the distance event with a time of 2:22.96. Butler was second at 2:24.32 and Mclean took third at 2:27.47. Duffy placed fourth at 2:28.68 followed by Ellis at 2:29.82 and Shayna Presley at 2:31.21. Bean ran a 2:32.02 and freshman Tiffany Evanego recorded a 2:33.22 time. Michelle Van Pelt ran 2:36.11 and Conroy clocked in at 2:46.27.
Pariis Garcia had a strong showing in her first career Monday Meeting as she won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.90 seconds. Veronica Thompson trailed her in second at 58.06 seconds and Lovely ran a 59.92 after the senior celebration. Maya Lewis ran 1:04.28 and Williams finished at 1:05.41 for the Red Storm.
Another freshman topped the 200-meter dash as Shenika King won with a 26.95 second time. Thompson came in second at 27.87 seconds and Ariel Gordon placed fourth at 27.99 seconds. Brittney McLennon ran a 29.95 second time for the Red Storm.
Collins won the 100-meter dash with a 12.77 second time in one of the night's final events. McLennon also competed in the event and turned in a time of 14.18 seconds.
Autumn Edgar won the 400-meter hurdles, as she ran a 1:10.65 second time on a wet track. Brittany Petersen finished fifth at 1:33.45. Gina Frisa also placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles running a 19.65 second time.
Radiya Buchanan represented St. John's in the high jump and placed second at 1.51 meters. She also won the triple jump with a final distance of 33 feet, 10 inches. Barnes finished second in the long jump at 15 feet, five inches.
In the shot put, Danette Hinton was the Red Storm's leader, as she finished third at 11.55 meters. LaTreace Johnson placed fourth at 11.31 meters and Frisa slotted fifth at 10.05 meters. Ann Dagrin threw 9.08 meters.
