Red Storm Welcomes Providence For Senior Day

QUEENS, N.Y. - Following a gritty, gutsy 1-0 win over No. 25/16 Georgetown on Thursday night, the first-place Red Storm welcomes the Providence Friars on Sunday afternoon.

With a 5-0-1 mark through six BIG EAST games, the Red Storm enjoys a two-point lead in the standings over second-place DePaul, who played Butler to a 2-2 draw on Thursday night.
With its win on Thursday over the Hoyas, the Red Storm became the first team in the league to clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, the semifinals and finals of which will be held at Belson Stadium on Nov. 7 and Nov. 9, respectively.
Since a loss to Dartmouth on Sept. 14 dropped the Red Storm's record to 3-5-0, Coach Stone's sqaud is playing like a totally new team. St. John's is unbeaten in its last seven (6-0-1), with five shutouts and a goals against average of just 0.29 during that stretch.
Junior Shelby Halász scored the first goal of her St. John's career against the Hoyas, converting on a try from just inside midfield in the waning minutes of the first half. The goal would prove to be the game winner.
Sunday will serve as the final regular season home game for nine St. John's players. Sandra Osborn, Jen Gibbons, Rachel Hoffman, Chelsey Martino, Georgia Kearney-Perry, Marisa Ammaturo, Jazmine Rhodes, Caitlyn McLaughlin and Deanna Murino will each suit up in red and white for the final time in regular season play at Belson Stadium against the Friars.
Scouting Providence
With three games remaining on their 2014 regular season slate, the Providence Friars currently sit in a tie for fifth place in the BIG EAST, one of two teams (along with Villanova) that carries a 3-3 league record.
As a team, the Friars possess one of the stingiest defense in the conference, allowing just 15 goals on the year, good enough for first in the BIG EAST.
While their defense has kept them in many a game, the Friars have had trouble scoring this season, averaging just 1.13 goals per contest, which places them at seventh in the conference.
Red Storm vs. Providence -- The Series
The Red Storm and the Friars enter Sunday afternoon's match up with a dead-even series history, with each side sporting 12 wins over the course of the series history.
St. John's took the last meeting between the two schools last fall, but prior to that, the Friars went unbeaten for four-straight games.
In addition to their 12 wins apiece, there have also been two ties, one in 2005 and the other in 2009.
Last season in Providence, Rachel Daly scored two goals, including a game-tying tally in the 89th minute, and Morgan Tinari netted the game-winner in overtime, giving the Red Storm a 3-2 win in the Ocean State.
