Despite falling to the Friars, the Red Strom continued its run of incredible defensive play on Sunday. Diana Poulin and the Red Storm back line surrendered only one goal to Providence, just the third tally of the conference season that they have given up.
Poulin leads the conference in shutouts, registering seven clean sheets on the season, four of which have come in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm has also allowed no more than one goal in any BIG EAST game this season.
The Red Storm (16 pts) is one of three teams that has already punched its ticket to the BIG EAST Tournament, joining DePaul (17 pts) and Georgetown (16 pts). Creighton, Xavier and Seton Hall have all been eliminated from postseason contention, meaning that Marquette (13 pts), Providence (12 pts), Villanova (10 pts) and Butler (7 pts) are vying for the final three spots.
A pair of wins in its final two games would clinch the Red Storm's first-ever BIG EAST Regular Season Championship.
The Red Storm cracked the top 100 of the RPI for the first time this past week, checking in at 95 following a 1-1 week that included a win over Georgetown. The Red Storm also enjoys an NSCAA/Continental Tire Regional Ranking of six, its highest ranking since early September.
SCOUTING SETON HALL
The Seton Hall Pirates have struggled in 2014, entering Saturday's match with a 3-8-5 record. In addition, the Pirates have yet to win a conference game, tallying an 0-4-3 mark in BIG EAST play.
The Pirates' main issue this season has been their inability to put the ball in the back of the net, scoring just eight goals in 16 games this season, including 11 shutouts. No Seton Hall player has registered more than one goal this season.
While they have struggled on the offensive end, the Pirates have been superb at keeping opponents off the board, registering a GAA of just 0.93, good enough for second in the league.
RED STORM VS. SETON HALL - THE SERIES
The Red Storm has enjoyed tremendous success against its local rival over the past two decades, compiling a 13-5-1 mark against the Pirates.
St. John's last dropped a decision to Seton Hall in 2011, having earned a victory in each of their last two meetings.
From 2002-2011, the Red Storm enjoyed a ten-game winning streak against the Pirates, outscoring Seton Hall by a 20-5 margin during that stretch.
