St. John's Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening Statement:
"It was a much better second half for us energy wise and as a team so we were very happy with the way we finished. We were able to finish off a conference game at home which is always important. I was very happy with our effort in a number of different areas; rebounding, second chance points, 47 points off the bench. I thought as a team we did a really nice job and now we get a little bit of time to recuperate as we head into our next game one week from today."
On not getting complacent after 10 straight wins:
"Over the years we've talk about not letting ourselves ever think that we have arrived. The important frame of mind is that every opponent is different and every match is different. It comes down to players. These players want to win. They come to practice everyday engaged and ready. That is part of the enjoyment of coaching this group. There is leadership from our upperclassmen and our younger players have also bought in as the year has gone on so it is not as hard for me as you may think. The culture that we are creating is starting to form but we know we have a long way to go. Every team is dangerous. We understand that we have to fight for everything we want to strive for."
On getting a win before having a week off:
"It was important for us. We are on a roll and our players understand this was an important game in a long stretch where we haven't had a break. This is a deserved break for them. We will try to improve on some areas throughout the week and prepare for a very difficult Villanova team that has played very well on the road in our conference. We will make sure we stay sharp."
On the team's second half adjustments:
"We didn't play at the tempo and energy level that we wanted to and didn't play very smart at times. Part of that was because Providence made some. We had to make sure that we were playing smart. We just talked about playing our style and that has been the message throughout the last few weeks. We are going to do what we have to do and make everyone else adjust."
Junior Forward Amber Thompson
On having a week off before the next game:
"It's kind of bittersweet. I like to keep playing because we get to keep our energy going but every game wears and tears on your body so we can use a little break."
Sophomore Guard Danaejah Grant
On her first career double-double:
"Yes, it was a great point. I didn't even realize I had one but at the end of the day it helped us win so it was good."
On winning 10 consecutive BIG EAST Conference games:
"We understand that it's a tough conference which is why we keep working hard to maintain what we are doing on the court. I think every day in practice we take a step towards keeping our rhythm."
